We're predicted to face the worst flu season in a decade, as the major strain =/= strain targeted in seasonal vax. If you want to reduce your risk of spending holidays ill, I recommend using a good-fitting mask. I like the Canadamasq Q100 a lot; it's earloop but N95-equivalent, breathable, 🍁-made.

Again, to every videogame writer who wrote funny emails to read in an immersive sim/etc. where I rolled my eyes and said out loud, "lol like anyone would ever email something this on the nose", again, sorry, I was wrong, life sucks, you nailed it

It really bums me out that tons of local restaurants suddenly have generative AI pics on all of their digital storefronts, some on in-person menus too. Even ones that previously had real pictures of their food. It also seems like, IDK, false advertising?

If you're Canadian, please sign this! You'll have to confirm your signature via email but for good reason--this is a petition sponsored by an actual member of parliament. These petitions can lead to actual meaningful action here. Doesn't take very long, please add your support!!
Canadians! There is a petition to sign to protest Mastercard and Visa's control over the purchase of legal adult content. This is specifically about the Steam & itchio situation, but language protects adult creators.

Just finished The Practice, the Horizon, and the Chain by Sofia Samatar. I read Olga Ravn's The Employees not long ago. I think you could have a very interesting conversation about the similarities and differences between those two works.

Steam Next Fest is here and that means you can play the demo for Generation Exile RIGHT NOW!

The Luddites had a great phrase for what they opposed: "Machinery hurtful to commonality." It's an excellent reminder that being a Luddite doesn't mean you hate technology, but that you hate the way capitalists create and use technology to destroy community and human flourishing.
Luddites weren't anti-tech.

They were against technology being used by the capitalist class to capture wealth at the expense of the worker.

I am a Luddite, and a tech enthusiast. They're not in opposition. I want technology that makes MY life better, not that sells my life piecemeal to corps.
I hate crypto, I hate online gambling, I hate AI, I hate pay-later, I hate subscription models, I hate the gig economy, I hate ring cameras, I hate drones, I hate self checkout.

I don't want to come off as a luddite but capitalism's hold on tech sucks.

Has anyone read anything they can share about the function and impact pessimistic fiction has in society? I've seen things about utopian fiction describing its role in helping us imagine future possibilities, but less about pessimistic or even dystopian fiction.

I’m gonna say this a little more loudly: there is no “exception” for GenAI usage if you support artists, writers, musicians, the planet, poor communities polluted by the generators, etc. None. Your “silly little uses” are still exploiting everyone and fucking everything up. Full stop. Thread.
