I could have looked up the origin of “cordwainer” but I knew if I waited 70 years someone would tell me.
Spotted on this morning's walk: 'cordwainer', a shoemaker or worker with cordwain leather. You might not guess from its appearance that 'cordwain' has Mediterranean origins – the word comes from the Spanish city of Córdoba.

Does immigration change a society? Yes
Is change difficult? Yes
Is change necessary? YES!
The only antidote - and I do mean the ONLY one - to Trump and Miller's xenophobia is a full-throated defense of immigration and a full-throated attack on the racism and xenophobia currently guiding immigration policy. You can't half-ass this one, you can't Very Reasonable Limits this one.

Immigration is a massive net positive for the US and always has been. Every argument against it is grounded in racism. Them's the breaks, kids. But you can't centrist your way out of this.

Okay, so do us all a favor and take an indefinite leave. Recharge your batteries, touch grass, find out there’s more to life than doing Trump’s perverted will.

The key point that anyone who is left of center really needs to understand is that the market is infinitely malleable. There is no market out there, which we decide whether or not we want the government to interfere with. The government structures the market, how it is structured is a policy choice.

My son-in-law expressed an interest in baking years ago. I gave him my copy of The Breadbaker’s Apprentice, and that might be one of the best decisions I ever made.

Happy Day after the Feast. I hope everyone is fat and happy, and that there’s enough leftovers for the turkey and cranberry sauce sandwiches you know you want today.

Miller should be nowhere near the levers of power or policymaking, but our statescraft over the past 40 years has been so degraded that he’s as much a logical conclusion as Trump the Great Entertainer™️.
Stephen Miller is now arguing that assimilation is fundamentally impossible and that certain cultures are not compatible with Western civilization
