I’d love higher ed policy to be made by people who actually worked in higher ed, but apparently that’s too much to ask

Hannah Arendt distinguished totalitarianism “from other forms of political oppression known to us such as despotism, tyranny and dictatorship” in that totalitarianism seeks to subjugate civil society and private lives, not just political opponents, using psychological, not just physical, repression.

I saw the new George Orwell documentary last night. It’s called 2+2=5. I have been a little bit squeamish about applying the word totalitarian to Trump and the Republicans. Not anymore. We are experiencing a totalitarian movement. There’s no question.

Pope Leo quotes Hannah Arendt:

“The ideal subject of totalitarian rule is not the convinced Nazi or the convinced Communist, but people for whom the distinction between fact and fiction and the distinction between true and false no longer exist."

Pope Leo calls for news agencies to stand as bulwark against "post-truths," lies and manipulation
Pope Leo XIV has encouraged international news agencies to stand firm as a bulwark against the "ancient art of lying" and manipulation.

No surprise if the colonisers turn out to have feet of clay. 🤷🏽‍♂️

Factory farms for salmon are filthy environments that require a constant flow of clean water and constant treatment with toxic chemicals. These places are so bad that some 30 per cent of all farmed salmon simply die from their conditions, they don’t become food for customers.

I’m only surprised that the government bounty hunters weren’t turned to, er, ice. 🧊

Click through and read through this incredibly good explanation about the power of turning the monstrance away at the gates of the ICE dentition centre in Chicago. Centuries of context matter; the symbolism is powerful to those who understand it.

It's always good to see priests who still remember there are *seven* Catholic social principles. Also, that noise you hear is the USCCB screeching to the Vatican and getting back nothing, lol

Must give it a try the next time I’m in Cambridge!

What a mad world. 93% of the US stock market is owned by just 10% of the population. And they’re not just collecting wealth beyond the dreams of avarice - they’re collecting power, owning media, social media, buying politicians and policy.

Margaret Thatcher recognised the need to provide asylum for refugees, as well as the need to distinguish them from immigrants. No hope of that from her successors, of course.

Just a reminder that Reform’s former Leader in Wales, Nathan Gill, has admitted taking bribes from Russia while an MEP.

Yet Reform spokespeople have suggested their leaders didn't really know Gill.

So here's a few pictures of him with Nigel Farage.

I seem to remember a mention of doors in the side of a ship; but this suggests the need for wharves in a port for unloading.

You’ve done well! After some bumper years, 2025 has been very disappointing in the SE. Fig jam is excellent. We usually get ours from trips to France, but I cannot believe that it’s hard to make. Possibly a chutney, too? Good luck.

Our authoritarianism is run on clichés borrowed from the Eastern Europe of twenty years ago. Paid protestors, disloyal cities, evil Soros, vast conspiracies — it was all tiresome then and there, and now it’s pathetic.

Trump: "They're, like, insurrectionists, they're terrible people. But you really wonder why. Why are they doing it? What are they gaining? Other than they're obviously paid. They're paid a lot of money."

Where now for Britain’s Universities?
UK higher education now faces a very bleak future, retreating in the face of little public sympathy and limited political interest.

The original horse-transport, used by the Arabs and Byzantines, was a galley type, with twin stem posts at the stern, from which hung a pair of doors. The craft was designed to be backed onto the beach and the horses unloaded, as you suggest. I am not quite sure how this worked with ‘round ships’.

I’ve not read Rop: reference? For ‘fled’ read ‘evaded’, then? 🧐
