Everyone I read talking about this from a left Labour pov said that these people have no ideas or aims outside of factional infighting. Their aim is to keep the left of Labour away from power in the Labour party. They don't care about anything else. Thought it was hyperbole but I guess not.

So what this new labour initiative represents is the ability for the government to take any, let's say, substantial amounts of wealth off of asylum seekers, and then send them home without it after a few years of living through processing here.

Now this might all seem dubious to a sheltered UK citizen, but fleeing a warzone or persecution means you probably can't rely upon the banking system, as you are persona non grata, even criminalised, in the place that you were born.
