Fire protection measures don’t do or mean shit. Nothing will stop a firestorm at full force except not putting anything where that happens.
600 Via de la Paz. Brand new house, less than a year old. This site is in LA’s Very-High Fire Hazard Severity Zone, so the house was required to comply with Chapter 7A of the California Building Code (and was of course, like all new houses, fully sprinklered). Almost nothing remains.

? This is a normal one bed floor plan lol. 800 a week is insane tho.
Took a little tour of a friend's modern, one bedroom apt at the Warm Springs BART TOD and honestly I'm kind of astonished how small it was. $3,500 a month. I mean, clearly a lot of Silicon Valley workers are willing to pay for it but man I felt claustrophobic.

Me every time I see a development plan put the tallest buildings on the main road.
Zoning in theory: we need land use regulation to keep homes away from sources of pollution.

Zoning in practice: the *only* places you are allowed to build new housing are right next to the highways and high-traffic streets that are the city’s largest sources of pollution.
How close would you be willing to live next to I-95 in Philadelphia?

Instead, they found Monopoly money and a jacket.

City of Yes just passed the NYC City Council with a vote of 31-20. 🗽

Here is a map of that vote per council district.

“Traffic chaos looms” the herald sun reckons. The closure of this part of Flinders St for good is inevitable. It will have no effect on traffic. It’s the busiest pedestrian area in the CBD. The government should quietly never reopen it.

Shah Alam works outside Sotheby’s, shares a basement in the Bronx, and works 12-hour shifts at the fruit stand.

Last Wednesday, he sold a banana that would soon be duct-taped to a wall and auctioned as part of a work of art. When Alam was told the sale price, he began to cry.

I want to be able to block accounts directly from a skeet instead of having to go into their profile
My top Bluesky feature requests rn:

- A 'disable reskeets' button on profile so I can follow ppl and only get their original content
- Let us mute accounts from the pop-up modal when you mouse over their profile
- Stop repeatedly showing me the same handful of viral skeets every time I refresh feed

The way the tri-state area does things is so wack. Why do you have hundreds of buses that come into the city? Why aren’t those buses going to train stations so people can transfer?
Breaks my heart to see $10bn in transit funding to…rebuild one bus terminal. This is regional rail-level money, the kind of money that should dramatically improve commutes, not cement shitty ones in place. Wish this was going to something like this instead: pedestrianobservations.com/2019/05/29/a...

Sydney would be unstoppable if it could fix the cost of housing, the tyranny of distance and its obsession with rules and restrictions. We are let down by leaders who say the right things but act timi...
