I identified four (4) NBA teams part-owned by a firm that sold a property to the Department of Homeland Security for a planned ICE detention center. And I explain why more owners could follow in the warehouse to megajail business.

it's the new [eyeblack]:
An NBA investor in four teams profits from immigrant athletes — and immigrant megajails

I think this is right. But I still want a promotion-relegation style system within the NBA to give the mid-range teams something to play for.
A lot of exhaustive anti-tanking copy from my colleagues from over the weekend. It was the right time for it, with the commish at the lectern & execs around to opine. A lot of very smart people weighed in, with some good ideas.

Ultimately, I don't think it matters as much as we think it does.

People where I live already show IDs to vote.
Emmer: "They want law enforcement to show IDs but they don't think people should show an ID to vote. There's some type of intellectual disconnect."

On this week's Hard Pass, @briankarem.bsky.social, Mark, and I talked about coverage of the various cabinet crashouts last week (but somehow didn't even get to the WSJ's Kristi Noem story). It's a lot.

The CBS executives who did this should acted disgracefully and I hope President Ocasio-Cortez's future FCC chair takes notice.

A few years ago, @jenniferharker.bsky.social (who is here but not really here) and I did a piece on how this kind of product was rolled at a newspaper chain. The focus was more college sports for alums than high schools though.

I wouldn't have seen the AOC tweet if people hadn't shared it here. Someone seeking clout on X is different than NYT editorial policy.

The "rewrite man" is an old journalistic role, an relic of the days when journalistic outfits had more reporters than news hole and lots of people to throw at breaking news. I am certain these are not the Plain Dealer's current problems.
“We plan to hire an AI rewrite specialist to ingest the reporting by Hannah and others and use AI to convert it into stories.”

The editor of the Cleveland Plain Dealer said it will use AI to ‘write’ its articles.

The online left is in the audience attraction business, not the politcal change business. The Dems can never be doing enough for them. Of course, sometimes the party leaders are wrong and reflexively dismissing the online critiques is not the correct choice either.
One of my black pill moments was that Biden actually focused on lifting the lowest quartiles up at the expense of the rich and the online left screamed at him about student loan forgiveness.
The vibecession was primarily driven by lower sentiment among the upper and middle classes, not the lower classes.

The large Kirkland bag of coffee at Costco went up $6 last year. It is not breaking the bank for me since I only buy one bag a month, but I am pissed about it every time.
If you're eating one egg a day, a 2% increase in egg costs raises your egg spending by about two dollars annually. You'd notice this?

Too bad lying under oath isn't a crime.

<puts hand to earpiece>

Wait, I'm being told we have an update.
The acting director of ICE told Congress, under oath, that local law enforcement in Colorado leaked raid plans, allowing gang members to escape.

After 9NEWS questioned ICE's claim and its timeline, ICE deleted the claim from its social media platforms.

Cultures have never been static, nor are those shared ideas inborn.
1/3 What Musk is really referring to here is, of course “race” - that construct that served to define the hierarchies of wealth & power structured by modern colonialism. Like other far right racists though, he uses the word “culture” as a seemingly less pernicious synonym.

I honestly don't know if there's any good work done in this area, but every famous evo psych person I've ever encountered is either trying to naturalize social hierarchy or justify men cheating on their spouses with younger women.

Expanding to 32 teams and splitting the league into an NBA-1 and NBA-2 and doing promotion and relegation between the two.
NBA Commissioner Adam Silver on tanking: "It's so clear that the incentives are misaligned."

Silver said the believes tanking is worse than we've seen before and said that's what led to the recent fines as an effort to put all teams on notice. Silver emphasized again the league is focused on fixes.
