Wow, hello new people! An intro: I spent many years at NASA JPL researching polar ice on Mars; doing spacecraft science operations for Cassini, Phoenix, MRO, & Curiosity; inventing science ops for Perseverance; & working w/ Earth disaster response folks. I am currently a public speaker + artist.

Yesterday Curiosity took pix of jagged peaks in the distance with its ChemCam. I stitched them together, did some work on them, and... just look at that view... I've been doing this since Sojourner landed & this is one of my fave images ever... Credits: NASA/JPL-Caltech/LANL/S Atkinson

“Even today, when the planet is dark, there still is hope. Don’t lose hope. If you lose hope, you become apathetic and do nothing” Don't lose hope. Also, send Musk and Trump into space on a one-way ticket. 😍
Jane Goodall said she would launch Trump and Musk on one-way trip into space
Primatologist said in interview released after her death she would also put Putin, Xi and Netanyahu on that spaceship

The Cassini Saturn probe swept its cameras around #OTD in 2017 to collect some of its last images.

A few days later it would end its twenty year mission by plunging into Saturn's atmosphere, a fireball flashing across the sky at over 70,000 mph. 🧪 🔭

Images: NASA/JPL-Caltech
A color photo of Saturn's moon Titan. It is pale yellow, with a thin blue haze of atmosphere limning its surface. Titan covers the bottom half of the photo, which is taken from far enough away that the curvature of the moon is visible. Saturn is beginning to rise over the edge of the moon.
A black and white photo of Saturn. About a quarter of the planet is visible, though most of it is in darkness. Along the illuminated edge one can see faint cloud bands. a portion of the rings are visible behind the planet.
A black and white photo of Saturn's rings. Several thin bands are visible, along with gaps both wide and narrow between them. The cover approximately the bottom half of the image, curving from a point midway up the right side of image down to the lower left corner.
A hazy color photo of Titan. It is a darker yellow here than in the first photo; approximately half of it is night side and covered in darkness.

1/x 🧵 🔌💡 #Greensky. Hey climate peeps! Here’s a local victory to celebrate, and some lessons from it. Last night, the Town of Poughkeepsie, NY, voted to overturn its 18-month moratorium (6 months, renewed twice) on grid-scale battery energy storage systems (BESS).

Also the civil servants who are fleeing NASA out of fear of more budget cuts. Instability is poison to scientific research.

Everyone writing about Perseverance today should be asking how many of the scientists and engineers who were involved in this discovery no longer work for NASA bc of Trump.

We have to seriously consider the possibility that the muddy sediments of both Earth and Mars were inhabited by microorganisms more than three billion years ago, and that both groups of creatures were making their livings by eating and breathing similar things.

These roads are an underrated part of the basin experience. One highway gets to 4900 feet just a few miles past sea level at stovepipe wells.

A black road winding between golden-brown rocky hills, leading down into Death Valley where white sand is visible. In the distance are mountains that make up the other side of the valley.

Did you know your MacBook has a sensor that knows the exact angle of the screen hinge?

It’s not exposed as a public API, but I figured out a way to read it and make it sound like an old wooden door.

A striking thing reading about Norwegian resistance in WWII was, after reprisals put armed resistance on the back foot, the people still made life unbearably difficult for the occupiers with 10,000 tiny acts. Even if you can't sink the figurative battleship, you can still foul its hull and screws.

LA kept a small, peaceful, totally fucking irritating presence at the Federal buildings and LA showed up at the hotels where ICE was staying and made sure they didn't get any sleep. LA Unions got involved. LA limousine liberals got out of their fucking limousines and stood watch on corners. 7/

How does lava sound when it comes to the surface of the Earth? Listen to a lava flow oozing out of its effusive vent high on the southwestern side of #Etna, 28 August 2025. That day no visits by tourists were allowed on the site, which permitted this (relatively) clean recording
