It's been 150 days of Kavanaugh stops in America, and it just keeps getting worse, so I checked in with the justice to ask him if he's had second thoughts.

My request for comment did not elicit a response.

The third in a once-every-50-days Law Dork series:
150 days of Kavanaugh stops, and it just keeps getting worse
Kavanaugh stops would always be bad. As a tool in the Trump administration's authoritarianism arsenal, they are worse. The consequences are everywhere.

"It was never about adjudicating [Judge James] Boasberg’s behavior; it was about making splashy headlines and fueling right-wing attacks on the judiciary without regard to whether DOJ’s specious charges would withstand meaningful scrutiny."
“This ought to be the final nail in the coffin of congressional Republicans’ breathless efforts to gin up impeachment charges against a judge whose only actual sin, as it turns out, was to decline to roll over when the government defied one of his orders, and then lied about it.”

Me @ “One First”:
207. The Justice Department Beclowns Itself (Again)
The denouement of DOJ's misconduct complaint against Chief Judge Boasberg provides useful lessons relating to both the Department's continuing misbehavior and the emptiness of calls for impeachment.

Swear to god, ICE could just announce they're leaving a city but not leave and the media will just stop covering that city completely even though ICE never left.

It's what ICE and the media did with LA and they're doing it with Minneapolis too

In midtown, striking nurses are marching on Kathy Hochul’s office, calling out an emergency order she signed allowing traveling nurses to work in NY during the strike.

They say that move has prolonged the strike and is a handout to the hospital system.

DHS said that the woman CBP shot in the chest in Portland was “involved” in a gang shooting.

Her ~involvement~ was that suspected gang members sexually assaulted and robbed her.
After Border Patrol shot two people in Portland, DHS claimed they were "vicious gang members" tied to a past shooting.

But records I obtained reveal a US prosecutor has since directly contradicted DHS, saying, "We're not suggesting he is a gang member." My dive into how DHS' claims have collapsed:
DHS’s account of two Venezuelans shot by border patrol falls apart in court: ‘A smear campaign’
Immigration officials said agent shot two ‘vicious gang members’ in Portland, but records obtained by the Guardian reveal US prosecutor contradicted claims

The public library is an essential component of a 21st-century left political project as an example of both what is already available to us and what can be improved upon in the future. The library is a public good, and it is free as a public service.

I want more people to make the connections.

I keep thinking about the first time I got gassed by the police, in the 90s, in a nonviolent group that included clergy, protesting against the KKK. I keep thinking about the dozen or so minors the US has executed since then. Brutality against protesters & children is not new, it’s just escalated

THREAD. ICE is in the news, and rightly so, but a lot of the commentary fails to see how the underlying surveillance tech, militarization, infrastructure, policies/practices/training, and corporate profiteers are shared by other domestic agencies and repressive bureaucracies in other countries.

No need to imagine. The country incarcerates children as young as 9 years old daily in youth prisons and jails. Those children are routinely sexually and physically assaulted and also emotionally tortured. They are fed terrible food and given barely any education. This country has done this for yrs.

“There was a line of children waiting to get treated by medics.”

ICE did this.
Trump did this.
Republicans did this.
“Centrist” Democrats who have caved on anti-immigrant bullshit for years did this.

Abolish ICE. That’s the minimum.
Someone just told me that they saw multiple people passed out during the first brutal wave of tear gas when there were still a ton of children and elderly folks. There was a line of children waiting to get treated by medics

Hochul's announcement yesterday on immigration is another half-measure:

It wouldn't stop local cooperation with ICE; it'd prevent local governments only from being *paid* by ICE. Local govs can still help ICE sow terror for free.

Is this really acceptable to the people of New York State?
Governor Hochul unveiled a proposal to bar local police from signing contracts with ICE.

But many localities collaborate with ICE without contracts, and Hochul’s proposal wouldn’t change that.

DHS doesn’t even bother trying to lie well. The man whose skull was shattered told the hospital he’d been struck by ICE officers, an ICE officer told hospital staff the guy “got his sh*t rocked,” then when it became clear how badly he was injured, they claimed he deliberately ran into a wall.

We know CBS is a fully-captured fascist propaganda mill, but I’m still caught on how Stanford manages to be a “respected institution” while being home to a racist phrenologist (I know, I know, Standford is kind of the vanguard of eugenics, but still)
"In response to announcement that he will be a new CBS contributor, Andrew Huberman tweeted “I’ve always gone issue-by-issue on health & science, spoken to experts w/a range of takes & presented where I see the center of (data) mass pointed. I’ll do the same with @CBSNews”.

I get tired of saying it, but I’ll say it again: the nature of oppression in America is that they workshop it first on Black, Latino, Asian & Native people.

But it is always, in the end, coming for everyone.
The arrests of journalists Don Lemon and Georgia Fort are a test for every MSM member with a platform. If you are not voicing your outrage at this blatant violation of the First Amendment, you are utterly discredited as a journalist.
