I've been a bit sick the last few days (I think the -20° days in Montreal got to my respiratory system) so time to catch up on what I haven't posted yet: first up, the REM in Montreal is absolutely fantastic, a real demonstration of how great automated metros can be

woke up this morning looking out onto the Atlantic from Halifax Harbour, and this time in 13 days (including a few days in Montreal and Toronto) I'll be looking out onto the Pacific Ocean in Vancouver, having travelled there entirely on the iron road. may you all have a lovely 2026

A green line train races away from Radisson station, which is a giant concrete cavern that looks straight out of original concept art for star wars textured concrete wall panels with tasteful architectural lighting at honore-beaugrand station, the northern terminus of the green line the cathedral like skylight letting light down to the mezzanine and platforms at Verdun station low winter sun beaming into the surface level concourse at angrignon

however, I'm not so sure about the route 36 bus from Saint-Henri to CONGESTION, doesn't sound very fun
An LED departure board for connecting bus services, the routes 17 and 35 show normal sounding destinations while route 36 just says "CONGESTION" with a sand timer symbol where the countdown to the next service should be

Saint-Henri station on the Montreal metro is just unbelievably stunning. no one tell Arden I said that it'll get jealous
gorgeous green/yellow tiles forming a huge feature wall in the cavernous space that is Saint Henri station. there's incredible concrete arches and feature lighting that helps offset the otherwise quite dark materials elsewhere skylights leading down to the platform looking up the escalators to the gorgeous triangular/hexagonal ceiling design up at street level the triangles and hexagons persist, and the iconic Montreal metro symbol (an arrow pointing straight down)

A bollard that's a parking sign and a bike hoop too? true innovation in street furniture
A short black bollard with some blue stickers on the top explaining when parking fees apply (and presumably which number bay you're in for payment purposes). There is also a small metal hoop halfway down which has a bike logo on it

Metro Tunnel good.
But the rail network (and the broader public transport network) can't reach its full potential while the buses, which in many areas is the only PT service, are so poor.

Melbourne's Metro Tunnel opened today, a city shaping project that's been discussed for over 20 years and been under construction for the last 10 years. 5 brand new underground stations, and once February comes round, a complete transformation in how I and so many other people move around our city

the new State Library station entrance and concourse are now open, including the connection to Melbourne Central!

I've timed it and I'm delighted to report that it's only 2 mins and 35 secs from street to platform 3/4 at Melbourne Central this way vs. 3 mins 28 secs normally via Melbourne Central

Parkville is gorgeous and so capacious. great demonstration of how much natural light a cut and cover station can get.

looking up towards the main Grattan Street east entrance for the University of Melbourne at Parkville station. There's a large green, orange, yellow and red tile artwork by Patricia Piccinini on one wall, and a huge skylight above the escalators to the surface. looking along the main station concourse running underneath Grattan Street. there's regular skylights in the concrete structure and big circular light fixtures that make it look like a sci-fi set looking from the escalators back down the concourse. it's looooong and takes you out under Royal Parade to the hospitals the very wide and white corridor underneath Royal Parade letting you cross without using the traffic lights

City Square returning and the new Town Hall station are going to be such fantastic additions to our city
Melbourne's St Paul's Cathedral towering over the newly rebuilt City Square. City Square is mostly different shades of bluestone pavers, with a lighter multi-tone section in the middle. it is lined with benches and garden beds, there is a ceremonial smoking dish to one side, and a visitor booth at the far end. A closer view of the ceremonial smoking dish. It's a metal sculpture above a cylindrical light polished stone base. the dish is surrounded by a semicircular bench and circular stone paving which breaks up the very square nature of City Square Looking down from the stairs from Collins Street to the Town Hall Station entrance that is the reason for the total rebuild. Metro Tunnel hosted a community thank you event so the space is filled with tables and chairs and has a number of free coffee, pastry and food stalls. An excerpt from the welcome to Country engraved into the bluestone wall/steps/seats that forms the sides and rear of the Town Hall station entrance. There is larger text in Wurundjeri language with a smaller English translation underneath that reads "We ask you to listen deeply to country with love"
