"All is lost" narratives are popular because people generally do not want to take action. Taking action is tiring so if all is lost, you are off the hook. Nothing is more seductive than not having to do anything.

What this means is that there's going to be a segment of people with limited means who do have insurance coverage but are still under-vaccinated. Not by choice but by bureaucratic design.

Let's be very clear that one of the major effects of the CDC no longer recommending various vaccinations is that it becomes much harder for folks who still want to be—or want their children to be—vaccinated to get their insurance providers to cover those vaccinations.

The sheer number of things a billionaire could fix just by throwing money — thereby becoming an overnight hero *while still living in total luxury* —

Like, I don’t get it. I work in community mental health. We could change so many lives with some billionaire’s pocket lint. Make it make sense.
Just thinking about how fucked up mega-rich people must be, because they can't even enjoy their money properly, because the most enjoyable thing to do with money is to use it to fix people's problems.

'A bit like poker': California's wet winter brings La Niña, El Niño confusion
Everyone in Southern California knows La Niña winters are typically dry. Yet this year has seen an unusual, surprisingly wet start to the rainy season. What gives?

It’s interesting how PJ has much more of a feel for the Rohirric material compared to Gondor. How can you get Théoden so right and Denethor so wrong? Special shout-out for the beacons though 🔥 🔥 🔥

Whatever else Jackson gets wrong in Return of the King*, he gets the arrival of the Rohirrim at the Pelennor completely and tear-flowingly right. Mind you, I cried looking at the manuscript page of that.
Théodred’s burial is such a beautiful piece of film-making. One of the moments where the Jackson trilogy really taps into the deeper sources of the book. I wish they’d gone this way more often.

And a huge thank to all the current and former CDC career staff who work tirelessly to protect all people. 💚
