One of the boxes of moths I brought to Lund University when I crossed the pond back in 2015 at the beginning of my PhD to work with @lepphylo.bsky.social to generate the first DNA data I would use for my PhD. These things were all classified together at the time. The DNA told us that was VERY WRONG.
A box with 100+ moths on insect pins with their data labels also on the pins. The moths are all sorts of sizes, shapes, and colors.

an amazing Habronattus jumping spider known only from a single spring in the bottom of an impossibly isolated and lonely desert valley
jumping spider with large central eyes, a white diamond sitting directly between the central eyes, all surrounded by a striking red mask which flows to the sides of the face, itself expanded laterally

Dark taxa are extremely diverse organisms that remain largely undescribed due to small size, subtle differences, & few experts.

Take this quiz to find out what you are - I'm a gall midge! whatdarktaxonareyou.static.domains/insect-quiz....

Losing my goddamned mind.

We can condemn political violence without valorizing a destructive, hateful bigot.

'Tis the season to search for lumps on plants, aka galls! These growths are created in response to other organisms — often insects, fungi, or bacteria — injecting their chemicals into the plant. 🧵⤵️

This gall looks like something you'd imagine a mythical fairy-like creature living in. It's shaped like a mushroom and has a small hole in the front. The stem of a plant has a couple round growths with small holes in them.
