Thousands of people protested in Nuuk, Greenland against Trump's threats to take over their country.

Just over 55,000 people live in Greenland, which means that this was a significant portion of the country's population.

i think about this every time i look at the latest Overdrive or Hoopla or Kanopy invoice. unless prices or demand stabilize, our budget and thus our library will soon be describable as “lessee of digital content with a legacy dead-tree side concern.” 📚
No surprise to librarians, but perhaps surprising to users, demands/prices for ebooks /audiobooks are killing public library budgets. David Szalay's book, Flesh,” costs DCPL:
$28.99 hardcopy
$59.99 ebook
$69.99 audiobook
DCPL owns hardcopy; rents & must repurchase ebook & audio book every 2 yrs.
Libraries can't afford e-books. D.C. lawmakers have a plan.
The demand and price for e-books is up — and it’s busting the D.C. Public Library budget.

Folks saying this is just as bad, I need you to reread about reconstruction. Not holding people accountable is how we get into this position. Removing people who colluded with the administration in an authoritarian takeover of higher ed from their position is the most reasonable thing to do.

We saw this when everyone was excited about Dragon Dictation for transcribing interviews and other audio…until we realized we would have to meticulously re-edit the entire transcript after it was processed.

This is why I laugh when people ask if AI will take over education.

They didn’t want a university without cancel culture. They didn’t want to be criticized for their retrograde views so they created a pretend school funding by their rich friends. The only people surprised that this failed were credulous enough to believe the fairy tales these folks told.

someone popped into my comments and was like “is anyone doing laundry for folks afraid to leave their house?” because their laundromat is usually full and is empty.

what an amazing idea. make a google form. send the link to people with a resource directory. start doing laundry.

We've been using our AC/ heating company for a decade. I've scheduled three HVAC service appts with them since they installed an AI assistant. The first one was scheduled for the wrong day, the second one they sent a plumber, the third one they sent someone who didn't know how to service radiators.

you know this guy is a FOR REAL photographer because he's telling the story of his brutal, unconditional arrest by federal goons and can't help but slip in a gear review
Photo by Pierre Lavie. Yes this is me. And I threw my Leica. It landed on the bass plate with hardly a scratch. Another Photographer grabbed it along with my phone and I was able to track him later. I was held face down tear gas deployed right in front of me and pepper sprayed directly into the eye.

bluesky really needs easy, accessible controls that allow folks to remove themselves from lists—or even better, give us an option between opt-in & out. there hasn't been any movement on any of this for over a year :( shouldn't preventing harassment take precedence over some other stuff?

i use the free, native @unsub.blocks.listifications.app to help monitor for harassment—it notifies me via DM if i get added to a list, feed, starter pack, or mod list. i've used it for years and found it helpful. (there's also one w/ block alerts, but it's guaranteed poster's madness)

Vehicles that are abandoned due to an ICE detention and towed to the City's impound lot will be released to their owners or a representative at no cost.
