i believe people when they say linux has gotten better in the last few years. what i'm skeptical of is that linux Guys have improved. i will not use an OS where i'm at high risk of someone calling me stupid for not liking some aspect of the experience. i must be allowed to hate the computer

Ebenezer Scrooge paid Robert Cratchit 15 shillings per week, which is, adjusted for inflation, 16.10€ or 18.70$ USD per hour.
Compare that what is minimum wage in your country, and keep in mind that when the book was written that was considered a wage so unlivable the employer got haunted for it.

MASSIVE FUCKUP: there’s a new 4K streaming restoration of Twin Peaks and in the pilot episode you can see the reflection of a scary-looking crew member in a mirror. how did they screw this up so badly?

an LLM would have launched 5 missiles back under the pretense of a proportionate response and spent its last moments groveling when the error became apparent
Machines make mistakes.

In 1983, 5 nuclear missiles from the United States were headed towards the USSR.

Stanislav Petrov had this information. It was his job to inform superiors who would launch a counterstrike.

It was the start of what would have been the Last War.

He pressed X to doubt.

As everyone knows, the basis of capitalism is that if a product is great you'll need to cram it down everyone's throats (without consent) for years before finally being bailed out by the government
"All of this falls apart if humans don't adopt the tech. This is why you've seen Meta cram its lame chatbots into WhatsApp and Instagram. This is why Notepad and Paint now have useless Copilot buttons on Windows. This is why Google Gemini wants to "help you" read and reply to your emails."
Analysis: OpenAI is a loss-making machine, how can it survive?
Don't call it a bubble! Loss-making monster OpenAI is on the hook for $1.4 trillion (with a T) in compute commitments. How can this go on?

thinking abt the irony that of the electric vehicle makers named after Nikola Tesla, one went full megalomaniac industrialist mode and the other was a blatant and uninspired scam- while the one named after Thomas Edison is just some chill dudes who built a cool truck and wanna build more cool trucks

cannot emphasize enough how every early Astronaut was a drunk-ass hotshot test pilot swearing and being inappropriate at all times. The modern Astronaut archetype of "a nerdy Starfleet science officer" was predated by "a drunk guy who is REALLY good at flying VERY fast planes in a dangerous manner"
“But you can bounce lasers off of mirrors the Apollo astronauts put on the moon yourself!”

I mean; ok, pretty good, but have you tried, “Yeah, the government /did/ lie about the moon landings…for example, every time an Apollo astronaut said ‘sunofabitch’ the official transcripts read ‘garbled’.”

I'm with this!
"not assuming" becomes "everybody is they/them" which doesn't seem helpful
It feels weirdly invalidating when used in a targeted way (surprise! you actually did assume!), and when used for EVERYONE kinda seems like non-binary erasure; removing meaning from pronouns thru genericization
hot take: I think we should go back to assuming peoples pronouns. if we get it wrong, we should be corrected, say "thank you for correcting me", and not get it wrong again.

This is true, baseball games do *not* have 9 innings. The actual theoretical duration has not yet been determined but is somewhere between 9 innings and the heat death of the universe
People on here will post anything. 'Baseball games have 9 innings.' No they don’t. That isn’t true.
