First CES panel. Intuit CMO Thomas Ranese is proud of his company's integration with OpenAI, which involves giving AI read/write access to tax data. Since prompt injection attacks are unavoidable, I asked him who will be liable when customer data is exposed: Intuit, OpenAI, etc?

He had no idea.

A school teacher sent a strange email to KDE sysadmins asking about login problems when trying to see their "certification" (?!), and it took me some googling to figure out that they were probably looking for the Kentucky Department of Education.

First time I see this particular confusion happen.

as a software engineer, ai coding makes my life measurably worse by polluting the information environment and vastly increasing the scale of incorrect bullshit my peers can and do create that i then have to clean up, or worse, guard against and NOT clean up. it actively makes people around me dumber
I think that may be the core division here: if you are an author or an artist the cons of generative AI very likely outweigh the pros for you

If you are a software developer the opposite is true

A few things missing from the #Venezuela discourse on Bluesky:

1 Venezuelans
2 Willingness to recognize that most Venezuelans will be happy about the arrest of Maduro
3 Patience

Everyone jumping to priors. Yes, this could be a disaster but no one even wants to consider the possibility of success

New year, new self-hosted blog, new content: What does "PC Compatible" actually mean, if anything? codon.org.uk/~mjg59/blog/...
What is a PC compatible?
Wikipedia says “An IBM PC compatible is any personal computer that is hardware- and software-compatible with the IBM Personal Computer (IBM PC) and its subsequent models”. But what does this actually ...

Both things can be true. This is dictatorship vs dictatorship.
"Maduro is a brutal authoritarian dictator," I wisely intone, as the corrupt demented paedophile US President violating Constitutional Law while operating a gestapo and concentration camps illegally arrests a foreign leader on charges which read like they were written on a paper placemat in crayon.

15 minutes after this post I found myself doing exactly this to figure out why my mom's iPhone refused to backup.
No need for a Mac to do the actual capture: to take a sysdiagnose, press vol up + vol down + side button simultaneously for 1 second, it will vibrate, and start saving logs. After a few minutes, Settings -> Privacy -> Analytics -> Analytics Data -> find a file named sysdiagnose_*.tar.gz.

seems conspicuous that programmer commentary on genAI is split between

"oh yeah i use claude all the time now. the 10× programmer is real and he's me. i am a god"

and

"yeah my coworkers use claude all the time. they keep committing crap that doesn't work and now i spend half my time fixing it"
