A small primer on the #NobelPrize awarded to Mary E. Brunkow, Fred Ramsdell and Shimon Sakaguchi today. This prize was for combining two separate fields of immunology research - genetic research on IPEX and immunology research of regulatory T cells (#Tregs), with enormous impact on biology/medicine

I’m just going to keep repeating that undocumented immigrant workers actually _help subsidize federal programs for everybody else_.

In 2022 alone, they paid $25.7 billion into Social Security and $6.4 billion into Medicare—both programs they can’t access due to their legal status👇🏽

China: We can repair a broken bone in minutes now.

USA: We will hunt our citizens down in the streets!

⚠️ Chinese researchers have invented bone glue that mimics how oysters stick to surfaces underwater.

The adhesive can reportedly repair orthopedic fractures in 2-3 minutes, even in blood-rich environments, and is bioabsorbable.

Aww A. triseriatus, my babies! Spent a lot of time rearing these guys as an undergrad. If these guys can persist, so can you!

Thanks for making this, this thread is a much needed boost right now.
My addition: we can now edit the human immune system and blood cells themselces to better fight cancer and cure sickle cell disease. All possible thanks to harnessing the bacterial alarm system CRISPR!

none of the gotcha examples of "out-of-control scientific spending" bother me in the slightest. isn't science about finding shit out? "they spent a million dollars of taxpayer money to see if they could make mice sexier" okay, well, what was the answer? I want to know too

Just a few off the top of my head: Giraffes can’t dance, the mitten, goodnight gorilla, dog’s first baby, cat’s first baby ,any book by Sandra Boynton or Eric Carle. I would try to buy a board book version if possible, they are more sturdy

Your periodic reminder that mRNA vaccines are a scientific and public health game-changer. Those that have been approved have passed stringent efficacy and safety checks. They protect you and your child against potentially fatal diseases. You may, however, get a sore arm.

Every single member of this administration is just a cheap huckster trying to grift the American people. Undocumented immigrants aren’t the ones leeching off your tax dollars; Kristi Noem and her stupid friends are.

After getting busted living rent free in the residence designated for the Coast Guard Commandant, Noem says she was forced to do that because the media doxxed her.

And to be clear: That doesn't mean it's not HARD.

IT IS HARD. Persistence is hard! You have to absorb a ton of information, master fields of literature, learn the cultural norms of a specialty, the research methods, on and on.

But no one with a PhD is inherently SMARTER than someone without.

I tell people this all the time! PhDs are matters of persistence (and getting there often a matter of privilege), not intelligence.

We just know a lot about a very very very tiny slice of the world.
greenleejw.bsky.social
Tons of people have "PhD-level" intelligence. The fun secret is that you don't have to be all that smart to earn a PhD. You just have to be willing to work yourself into the ground for years on end.

Also...PhD's often seem extra smart 'cause you generally encounter them on their chosen terrain.

the anti- C. elegans (and whiptail lizards) EO!!!!
cdelawalla.bsky.social
Here’s my top line overview:
Trump has signed a new EO that puts us firmly into authoritarian overreach territory.
Here's the top line:
1. Calls for political appointees--without science background--to approve all new funding opportunities and **every funded grant** to be sure it aligns with "the President's policy priorities".
2. Any grant that doesn't advance "agency priorities" can be cancelled at any time.
3. Funding cannot be given for research that: promotes "anti-American values", suggests sex isn't binary, and uses any selection for race. (Say good-bye to all c. elegans work!)
4. Funding will be prioritized to institutions that implement the "Gold Standard Science" and have the lowest indirect cost caps.
5. Grant peer-review is fine for now, but seems to be under threat for the future.

Holy fuck. That's such a stark and important number to get out there: your baby is 44 per cent more likely to survive to see their first birthday if they receive all the recommended childhood vaccines on time.
ryanmarino.bsky.social
Too many vaccines in the first year?Your child is 44% more likely to survive to one year if they are vaccinated than if they are unvaccinated.

They’re forming a CDC workgroup to decide which line on this graph looks better and their answer may surprise you

Underrated thing about Trump is he's genuinely bad at the patronage side of political gangsterism, you're supposed to dole out cushy borderline no-show jobs to the faithful but Hegseth and Bongino have genuinely hard jobs that are making them crash out like Meadow Soprano's roommate

We extend our heartfelt appreciation to everyone out there who stands up to oppression—whether by taking the streets, playing a support role, acting individually under cover of night, or in other ways.

All the freedom we have, we owe to those who have acted to resist tyranny. We can do this.

You can see America as a nation built on a monstrous agenda of genocide, enslavement, apartheid. Or you can see America as a nation of people who - massacred, enslaved, disenfranchised - absolutely refused again and again to accept that agenda. I am so proud of that second nation.
