Two housing updates with today's maintenance:
1) Exterior decor limits now increase from 200 to 250 at house level 3!
2) We were going to fix flying houses to bring them back to terra firma, but you all made such awesome stuff, so we made it possible with the base UI instead.

Really happy hearing Proton is releasing a privacy-focused spreadsheets app and I'm eager to try it. Google's office suite is a polluted shitfest of AI nonsense and irritating popups reminding me it's actively ruining itself with AI, and I'm eager for alternatives.

Proton now has an end-to-end encrypted spreadsheet app
It sure does look like Google Sheets.

A good reminder from a friend yesterday:

As the holidays ramp up, a gentle reminder that a lot of peeps have lost their jobs and are still struggling. It is easy to be kind when everyone is in a good place, but it's a lot harder when someone is not. 1/4

She paints a picture of an industry that all too often ignores bad actors until those bad actors threaten them financially.

Be advised that with only three viewing experiences, we have the sum total of what the American entertainment industry has to say about Thanksgiving.

1. Planes, Trains & Automobiles in full.
2. The camp play carnage in Addams Family Values
3. The clip below.

After that, it's all just football.
47 years ago today, dozens of turkeys met their unfortunate demise in a Cincinnati parking lot.

authors you have the chance to do the funniest thing right now
AI advocates have warned that if every author in the class action filed a claim, it would "financially ruin" the entire industry.
Authors celebrate “historic” settlement coming soon in Anthropic class action
Advocates fear such settlements will “financially ruin” the AI industry.

I really have no words for the scores of talented game developers that have been laid off in the past few weeks.

So many capable folks have been affected throughout the industry, with several existing and new MMOs being blown up for a variety of super shitty reasons.

My heart bleeds for you.

At this point there are *very* few MMOs left in active development.

- Star Citizen (please don't yell at me about SC)
- Stars Reach (Raph Koster's project, has had funding issues)
- Ashes of Creation (don't know much about this one)
- Riot's unnamed MMO (they make enough to self-fund)
- ???

NEW: After my last piece about what's slowing down game development, folks wrote in to ask "why didn't you talk about bad leadership?"

It uhhhh never came up. So I returned to the well and asked devs to explain why better leadership—not AI or any other tool—is vital to efficient game development.

another way to make games faster is to not fire over half the game industry in a quest to make number go up
Food for thought... There's a lot of talk about speeding up game development, given how many recent games took 5-7 years to make. But many of those were hampered by the switch from Unreal 4 to 5. And ALL of them lost months to covid. Perhaps one way to make games faster is to not have a pandemic

Believe old game devs when we tell you: burnout is real, it's painful. Be honest with yourself, take the breaks when you need them.
I've been burnt out for so long, I only just realized how long. I went from crunch at Iridium into crunch at Giant Squid with no break. About 3 years. It was too long.
