and in many of the contexts i worked in theres a very clear social hierarchy that you would be expected to reflect in how you interact with people and thats just...difficult to learn

body tension was one of the harder ones for me

because we (generally) tend to sit and stand pretty straight but in some contexts that comes off as weird and off putting so ive tried to sometimes be lore loosey goosey relaxed and it is weird to me

legitimately, there could be someone very clearly in distress, telling a harrowingly sad story, visibly crying but they dont wipe their tears and sit the way id expect a European to and my brain goes "huh, she wiped her tears weirdly, thats suspicious"

i don't even think i grew up particularly culturally isolated for a German but after literally 15 years i still catch myself trying to be judgemental which is just so dumb

i cant think of anything in intercultural communication that has been anywhere close to as difficult for me as body languages

and i am literally left handed so there was some other stuff that was difficult; but theres just no culture shock like when the body language is different
