There isn't a single problem "solved" by edtech that couldn't be fixed with smaller classes led by well-paid teachers given real academic freedom

huge day for carbadism on here. There's no way to be a centrist on this; we all must enlist in the war on cars

I'll be honest I'm fully fine with every single car being fitted with both a breathalyzer and a speed governor

Here’s what you need to know about English literature. Evelyn Waugh is a man and George Eliot is a woman

I just need more people to realize that this current moment is the product of a thousand smaller decisions by the liberal party to concede a topic, to avoid a fight about values and agree to a national-security framing to migration. And it doesn’t have to be this way.

also calling military personnel “war fighters” is the same energy as calling elementary school students “scholars”

most of the parents at my kid’s bus stop don’t speak English and it’s fine for me. I had a nice conversation with one of the other moms by pointing to our kids, saying their names, and holding up fingers to show how old they are. We met because our two year olds spontaneously hugged each other
This is a totally made-up quote that I agree with 100%

at Mass this morning the 2yo grabbed one of the seminarian prayer cards and poked each face one by one saying “Daddy? No!”

can confirm that the school secretary told me this morning that my kid’s late arrival due to religious observance for today’s holiday was not “lawful”* even though it’s right there in the statute

*Maryland uses lawful and unlawful instead of excused/unexcused because they are dumb
The choices are:
1) Remove all religious/philosophical exemptions.
2) Fail at public health.
3) Actually interrogate someone's religious beliefs, which is not something a school secretary should be doing
(which is how a lot of public school rules get enforced IRL)

An irony is that a religious exemption actually is workable when it's for a very small number of students. But conservatives - who have culture war rather than sincere religious objections to vaccinations - have basically ruined it for sincere religious groups like Christian Scientists
School vaccines often have a religious exemption...but that doesn't apply when there's an active outbreak. "Oops COVID levels are too high, anyone who's medically or religiously exempt has to be sent home."

the mayor and several members of the city council deeply dislike me but i basically shaped the last municipal election just by being really fucking annoying
I really can't emphasize enough that if you care about local politics, all you gotta do is show up. Just a regular schmegular person showing up. Literally just show up consistently in person and within a remarkably short amount of time, you will have a shocking amount of influence.
