And of course, because this was not immediate family, I can’t really take time off to process and grieve. My job is more flexible so I could warn why I’m distracted, but I also don’t have the energy to explain and deal with (well-meaning) sympathy when I don’t even understand my own grief right now

I’m reminded how complicated grief is. Because it’s not just my own pain about the loss. It’s seeing my mom in pain and knowing that’s only a small part of what she’s feeling.

Like how I do even wrap my brain around that?

We just found out yesterday that someone close to the family passed a week ago from lung cancer. He’d pushed everyone away so we had no idea. And also didn’t find out until too late that his service was on Sunday, so we missed that opportunity for processing the grief too.

I really hate the inclination older black folk have toward pulling away and isolating when they’re sick. I hope it’s something that’s changing because we gotta let folks love on us while they can and prepare for the end when we know it’s coming

That's what Mamdani is doing, and he's the most popular Dem in the US today.

The logic of "Democrats shouldn't stand up for trans rights because it will hurt them in elections" makes no sense. There are NO voters who are ready to vote for Democrats but decide not to because they just can't get on board with support for trans rights. Those people are Republicans.
