A reminder that the Kennedy Center is the literal and legal and congressional designated presidential memorial to JFK. This would be like Trump tearing down the Lincoln Memorial to build something “better.”
He’s going to tear it down

I recorded this today, in Portland, Oregon, at a huge march to the ICE facility in SW. The crowd was full of cyclists who had ridden there in memory of Alex Pretti; members of several labor unions; and ordinary citizens of every age, including this little girl. So of course ICE deployed tear gas.

This is tear gassing protesters just for protesting. There is no threat, and the only danger presented is ICE behaving recklessly. There is no provocation; this is just straight up assault.
Just experienced the most intense tear gassing of my life by federal officers outside the ICE facility in Portland where marchers gathered. There was no fast exit as they indiscriminately threw loads of gas and flash bangs. Children were in the crowd screaming. @oregoncapitalchronicle.com

I join my City Councilors in calling for prosecution of ICE for this flagrant violation of city and state law. This is illegal, and if ICE does this to families and children on a sunny peaceful daytime protest, I shudder to think what they do without that kind of daylight and public scrutiny.
I just got tear gassed along with thousands of union members, many of whom had their families with them. Federal agents at the ICE facility tear gassed children. We must abolish ICE, DHS, and we must have prosecutions. I expect to see enforcement of our city code prohibiting the use of tear gas.

At a peaceful protest organized by Unions in Portland, OR that marched past an Ice facility. Without warning or provocation launches tear gas and flash banks into the crowd. I had just observed a family with an infant and ~ 3 year old near where gas was deployed

People peacefully protesting ICE violence…were met with more ICE lawless violence. I’m deeply grateful to the community members who helped people wash their eyes and get elderly, children and other folks to safer air. Tear gas is incredibly damaging and I'm deeply worried about long-term impacts.

It's hard to overstate how ell-organized the portland march that got gassed was... organizers made the crowd promise to be peaceful, said the march would slow in front of the ICE building but not stop, that we would stick to one chant (ICE Out). They did absolutely everything right and got gassed.

Our friends in the Portland Teachers union got gassed today. It’s scandalous that our government sees these peaceful protesters as a threat. I see ICE and their leaders as in the last gasps of clinging to scant power.
This was the peaceful protest in Portland today. This was 15 minutes before tear gas being released. The crowd, was filled with members of 33 of our city's workers' unions...families, kids, and elders who were tear gassed. No warning, no time to disperse before 3 more flash bangs were released.

I'm so old, I remember January 2025 when this racist letter circulated in Lincoln County, OR encouraging people to report on their neighbors who are undocumented. The letter ended by saying this would bring houses prices down. What was condemned as racist vigilantism last year is now gov't policy.

Using a little time this afternoon to file our taxes and get my money back from the federal government to the maximum extent that's legal. Because *expletive deleted* ICE.

It’s only useful as a future metaphor, when it either collapses from poor engineering or we tear it down.
New at @washingtonpost.com:

Trump wants to build a *250-ft-tall arch*, for America’s 250th anniversary

The structure would tower over nearby memorials — changing DC’s skyline and blocking views of the Lincoln Memorial

It’s also spooking experts who say it’s just too big
Trump wants to build a 250-foot-tall arch, dwarfing the Lincoln Memorial
The president is eying a plot of land near Memorial Bridge. The art critic who proposed the idea called for a smaller arch or for Trump to pick a new site.

Not sure anyone has fully reckoned with the extent to which Trump's handlers are dismantling federal expertise and institutional knowledge. Whenever we send them packing, we'll need an army of dedicated experts ready to rebuild and expand the government's capacities to serve its citizens.

BIG news from @bloomberg.com, which confirms that ICE has gone ahead and *purchased* multiple commercial warehouses with the aim of converting them into mass detention camps.

This is likely to be the big detention story of 2026 — literal warehousing of people.

So what I'm hearing is that, in the last five days, two Black Members of Congress have been assaulted in apparent support of the regime's deportation diktat (Rep Frost, punched at Sundance & told he'd be deported; Rep Omar at an ICE townhall) & the regime has arrested four Black journalists.

Huh.
The arrests of Don Lemon, Georgia Fort, and Jamael Lundy are unacceptable and a clear violation of the Constitution.

This is a dangerous abuse of power that threatens the rights of every single American.

They must be released immediately.
