ICE left David, a 17-year-old boy, stranded on the side of Interstate 20 after pulling over his immigrant father, Hector, in Mississippi.

David began running in the scorching sun after the car and watched as it disappeared from sight—soon headed to a Louisiana ICE prison.

Here's their story.

Apparently we have money for this and for billionaire tax cuts but not health care subsidies. Make it make sense.

Some exciting news: 404 Media just won a grant via Muckrock to investigate book bans and educational censorship in the U.S. The plan is to file hundreds of public records requests around the country and to report on and archive all the documents for public use:

Thanks. Not sure how much they’ll use of what I said but maybe I’ll write a short essay about this over the holiday break.

The Texas national guard has absolutely no business being in Illinois.

This gets asked a lot but truly, what would you say if you saw it in another country?

Around 200 Texas National Guard soldiers and 300 soldiers from the Illinois National Guard have been mobilized in the greater Chicago area for an initial period of 60 days, according to the military unit in command of the troops.

October 8th and the air conditioning is still turning on at 10pm. Even for Laredo this is ridiculous.

Got interviewed by a reporter today who wanted to know what I thought about the similarities between the political situation in Nicaragua and here. (There are some). At the end of our conversation I only half-jokingly said “hope I don’t get into too much trouble over this.”

“My biggest fear is going to the hospital."

Pregnant immigrants are terrified ICE will show up outside the doctors' office or at the hospital. So they're skipping the care necessary to ensure a healthy birth.

Some experience dangerous complications as a result.

ICE fears put pregnant immigrants and their babies at risk
Fear of deportation is deterring people without permanent legal status from critical care. Doctors are worried for their health — and the health of their pregnancies.

One of the fundamental truths we need to acknowledge in this moment is that domestic violence is where fascists learned how to get away with their violence.

“What did you do to provoke him?” is exactly what victims hear when they try to seek help in an abusive relationship.
mskellymhayes.bsky.social
Y'all who keep lecturing protesters to "not give them an excuse" need to pause for a minute. Imagine yourself telling a DV victim, "Be sure not to mouth off or make any mistakes so he won't hit you. Don't give him an excuse! It's what he wants!" That's what you fools sound like.

I lived outside the U.S. from 2006 to 2009, plus most of 2014 so cultural references from those years are a big black hole for me.

Inspired by a post I just saw in which someone admitted they hadn’t seen a single episode of Friends nor the film Love Actually… what cultural hole do you have that’s a bit weird for your generation?

I’ll go first: I haven’t seen Dirty Dancing.

It was never about parents' rights. It was never about what is best for children.

It was, and is, about discrimination, hate, fear, conformity, minority rule, and authoritarianism.
