However: The environment art is beautiful, the sound design is excellent, and the puzzles (if you can call them that) are...bizarrely endearing despite reaching truly astronomical heights of moon logic.

Jesus tapdancing Christmas, Alone in the Dark 3 is a CHORE to play. Everything about it is slow, clunky, awkward, and obtuse. It's been several years since I played the first game, but it doesn't feel like the gameplay has improved even a little.

Game installed and set up. Loins girded. Let the spookening...BEGIN.

yep, way ahead of you

And it's on the poll because I have the game, and the random number gods decreed it!. It's in my backlog, so I do want to at least TRY to play it.

Good to know!! And just from a first glance while setting up, I can see it has some modular difficulty settings, which is a big step in the right direction. :D

Scarecrows have it right. All facsimiles of human shape should be named according to their function. A department store is full of clotheswears.

Ooooh, this is cool!! More palaeontology than archaeology, but yeah, something along these lines. I like the addition of a Minesweeper mechanic, too, that's fun. :D

As long-time viewers of my streams may recall, I did play through AitD1 in its entirety, but it was rough. I couldn't even get through the front door in AitD2, and ended up rage-quitting after multiple attempts. Sooo...we'll see if the bar of entry for the third game is any lower. XD;

Well, RIP me, because the winner of my spooky game Straw Poll is...

Alone in the Dark 3!

So I'll be starting that on stream in about an hour! Given my experiences with the first two games, I will need at least that full hour to gird my loins.

Currently bingeing @decafjedi.com and @bvigeant.bsky.social's Quest Quest podcast at work (because I should have started listening to it a long time ago, tbh) and nodding sensibly at their Very Correct Opinions. Well, most of them.

This is close! Strange Antiquities also takes the "shop" approach, but I don't think that game has a mechanic for cleaning the things.

Like Heaven's Vault, but more hands-on with the artifacts themselves. Bonus points for Weird Supernatural or Alien Stuff, especially if it's a slow burn thing--like the deeper you dig, the weirder shit gets, a la Dredge. 8)

I bet this already exists somewhere, but: give me a game starring an "archaeologist" where the gameplay involves actually doing archaeology. I'm talking the really granular stuff: finding dig sites, digging them up, cleaning dirt off of things, figuring out what they are, cataloguing them, etc.

Old painting of a phoenix, based on a photo of the back view of a sunning sea eagle doing droopy wings and looking like real bad anatomy.
A digital painting of the back view of a fiery eagle phoenix with a crest surrounded by flames and flying embers.
