The thing about stuff like this is that Trump wins even if he loses. Yes, this is about weaponizing the DOJ against his political enemies. But it's also about delegitimizing the criminal justice system, which makes his own felony conviction look like partisan witchhuntery.

I guess I was lucky to see bands like Fugazi play some pretty big venues for $5. And I remember people getting mad when they raised the door price to $6. But that's just me dating myself. Fin. 8/8

In my teen and college concert going years, folks were able to buy tickets directly from venue box offices. I don't think that's possible anymore. 7/n

Some artists have tried to get around Ticketmaster but end up playing in really inconvenient and suboptimal places like county fairgrounds. Others have tried to negotiate lower handling fees but you have to be pretty big and important to do that. 6/n

At the same time, their monopoly position prevents artist from circumventing the intermediaries (especially TicketMaster which owns venues (through Live Nation) and has exclusive deals with many others). 5/n

The rent seeking drives up prices to what the "market" will bear while pricing out some core members of an artists' fan base. 4/n

The problem is rent seeking behavior by intermediaries like Ticketmaster, especially when they have a monopoly on the market for tickets (putting aside the real and contractual vertical integration problems they've created). 3/n

Concert tickets by this logic are always underpriced because there is always someone willing (and able) to pay more $$ than some members of the artists' core fan base. 2/n

On the level of pure market economics, he's not wrong. But pricing concerts is a really interesting case of social pricing (not just what the market will bear). Artists have an interest in reaching a their fan base that can't be captured by pricing models. 1/n

The HP Used Book Sale is a local treasure. Given who lives in the neighborhood and donates, it just might be the best used book sale going. Our family always makes the annual pilgrimage (and goes home with more than we can reasonably carry).

This is the biggest attack on free speech since the McCarthy era but it also has significantly less popular consensus behind it than the second Red Scare. It's being done on behalf of a minority faction led by the most unpopular president in modern history. Organizing against this can win.

I'm taking periodic breaks from the flood of news to watch the GP Quebec bike race and lament the loss of the Trek CX Cup from the World Cup Cyclocross calendar. If Grand Tour teams can make the trip to N. America, surely some cyclocross teams can.

A top 50 US university yesterday fired an instructor, a department chair, and a dean because a course made some reference to transgender people without the brief official course description in the catalog saying “trigger warning: gender.”
