the story mentions his father’s conviction for killing several people in a drunk driving incident in blowing rock, nc — there’s a solid chance that i saw or read a news report about that at the time & that feels like a kind of time bomb ticking slowly until it goes off decades later

This is Charles Clyde Ebbets, the photographer who took the iconic “Lunch atop a Skyscraper” picture. Look at this fearless, dapper fuck wearing spats, suspenders, and a tie 850 feet above the ground. Absolute legend.
Here he is taking the photo.

This cheered me up. On an episode of Antiques Roadshow that I just watched, a Bob Ross painting of the northern lights was appraised for $20k-30k. It's sad he's not around to see it. But in dark times he reminds us that America produces a lot of good people. (Plus it's owned by a Native Alaskan.)

i never played this game but this is exactly what i thought whenever i saw the box
"Smug is the emotional tone of Mastermind. I want the buyer to feel judged by the box. Like the box is already disappointed in them. If you don’t want smug, don’t name the game Mastermind. This isn’t fucking checkers. This is a duel in a seminar room at Davos."

*zola* was the first movie i saw after the vax & the trailers were preceded by clips from famous movie celebrations & a “thanks for being here; we’re happy to see you again” & i actually cried
Seeing Mortal Kombat (2022??) in a theater for the first time after the vax, and it being just awful, but everyone so grateful to be together watching garbage (also having forgotten movie etiquette and shouting at everything)
Raising the always fun question: What are your most memorable theater-going experiences?

Mine also include The Matrix, Blair Witch, and being way too stoned in Belgium when Fellowship of the Ring was sold out so we sat in the back row for Mulholland Drive instead.

This is my friend's cat. Its name is Cookie Swirl, and it disappeared in the American section of Charlotte airport on 11/10. We're asking for your help. She doesn't have any other socials, so if you can post it widely to see if anyone knows where it is. It's a little thing, but matters a lot to her.

went to see *the untouchables* one summer morning after class & i was the only one in the theater until this guy walked in with an ENORMOUS bucket of popcorn, sat down directly across the aisle from me & immediately tipped the whole bucket in his lap

It was hands-down one of the most memorable theater-going experiences I can remember, a collective 30-minute butt-clench/armrest-grab for the final climb. And we knew he lived! Wild.

Today's Beat Connection post is about the Smylonylon mixes, which expanded the parameters of what a beat-matched set might include, and its equally diverting successor mixes from Codek Records. Smylonylon 001 goes perfectly with the holiday cooking! michaelangelo.substack.com/p/bc150-five...
