For decades, Huntington's disease research has focused primarily on neuronal vulnerability. However, mounting evidence reveals that astrocytes, microglia, oligodendrocytes, and other non-neuronal cells play crucial roles as active participants in HD pathogenesis.

Excited to announce the publication of a special issue on "Glia and non-neuronal cells in Huntington’s disease" that I co-edited with Dr. Asa Petersen in the Journal of Huntington's Disease (Volume 14, Issue 3)!

Can we identify biomarkers responsive to mHTT lowering?

In this new study, we investigated 💧 #CSF and ☢️ #PET biomarkers that could be used non-invasively to track 📈 the temporal response to #mHTT modulation in mice 🐭.

A new study has ranked Canada 3rd on a list of the top countries with social purpose, seen as being “the most progressive and inclusive” countries in the world.

Denmark and Sweden occupy the top 2 spots on the list, while Norway and New Zealand round out the top 5.

Today we report in 𝘾𝙚𝙡𝙡 𝙎𝙩𝙚𝙢 𝘾𝙚𝙡𝙡 a systematic approach to generate neural #organoids resembling various domains of the neural axis
Neal Amin & @kevinkelley.bsky.social developed a multiplexed morphogen screen to generate #organoids that mapped to almost 2/3 of the clusters in the 1st trimester CNS

This study adds a new dimension to our understanding of how aging alters oligodendrocytes and myelin plasticity, and their link to cognitive resilience. A fascinating read!
pouladilab.bsky.social
Why does Plp1 matter? Myelination is crucial for brain function, and its dysregulation is linked to cognitive decline. With age, Plp1 expression rises in the female hippocampus. The authors show that boosting Plp1 in older mice (both male & female) led to improved memory performance.

Women tend to age better cognitively than men, but why? This cool new study finds aging reactivates genes on the inactive X chromosome in the female hippocampus. This shift could contribute to cognitive resilience, with the myelin gene Plp1 playing a major role.

This large multi-omic study links tandem repeat (TR) variations to gene regulation in the human brain. We’ve know for sometime that TRs are not just genomic noise (TRs cause HD, FXS, SCAs, ALS/FTD to name a few), but ~18k TRs as potential causal variants is still a shock. doi.org/10.1038/s415...
