The first person we meet on Past Lives is Nanaya'ila'i, an Elamite woman from southwestern Iran who was enslaved around 645 BC by the Assyrians in one of their last campaigns of conquest. What can we know about her life? How did she experience the sharp end of empire? www.patreon.com/posts/nanaya...

The Falklands War was a just war because the people who live there didn't (and still don't) want to be forcibly annexed into Argentina.
it is extremely funny that white people from the whitest country in south america will appeal to "the colonization of the americas" as a reason to steal territory from what are peculiarly the indigenous people of that territory
then you'll begin to understand. The history of the colonization of the Americas is a history of violence and theft by your people, and all the state violence are the inheritance you left.

i think a substantial part of the problem is that i can invoke "Eduardo Valdes-Hevia" in the model and get something which you don't own but have a stake in. this is a machine which makes labor into capital and much of it is unregulated.

This robot could never force me off the sidewalk.
Just as you thought food delivery companies couldn't inflict any more misery on society:

Instead of using lowly-paid gig economy contractors to deliver groceries, they're replacing humans with robots, who, in turn, force humans off the pavement into road traffic.

this is pretty solid spiritual advice tbh

“Be prudent, be wise, be careful that your use of AI does not limit your true human growth. Use it in such a way that if it disappeared tomorrow, you would still know how to think, how to create, how to act on your own, how to form authentic friendships.”
Pope Leo XIV told students not to use artificial intelligence for homework, saying that AI ‘won’t stand in authentic wonder before the beauty of God’s creation.’

AI "has some use cases" in the same way that computers or the Internet have some use cases. Because of the scale at which it is being used and will be used, saying that AI harms the environment is tantamount to saying that human economic activity harms the environment.

War and Peace is an incredible novel, but it shows its age (derogatory) in Tolstoy's ugly marriage of romantic nationalism and fatalism in his theory of history.

I mean, it definitely, absolutely will not prevent the total commodification of this technology. Within 10 years everyone will be able to create photorealistic images of anyone doing anything basically for free. Audio on the same timeline, video to follow.

If you're worried that large masses of people are going to become completely detached from our rapidly contracting consensus reality due to this, I have good news: many of those people are already completely detached from said reality.
This is why I tell people not to feel embarrassed if they fall for fake images. These are extremely realistic.

Silicon Valley has built a world where creating countless realistic fakes is just two clicks away. You literally can't believe your eyes anymore. And it's only going to get worse.
Content should come with some kind of certificate of authenticity, so that with one click I can know what was modified. Half of what we see is fake, and it's getting harder to decide. My default now is to assume something's fake unless there's objective reason to believe it.

I have been fooled by far dumber things than this but it is extremely funny to imagine the depicted persons actually meeting like this.
I've seen this image enough now that I feel like I should point out it's fake.

Attempting to placate right-wing protests against "impartiality" is a losing game; first because the truth is impartial to their cause, and second because they will punish you anyway.
“When I was [at the BBC], at the height of Boris Johnson’s strength, that fear was ubiquitous. Scripts were sometimes written with a view not solely to their impartiality or truth, but the management of perception of impartiality from one side of the spectrum.“ @lewisgoodall.com
