Whatever else you say about Trump, the fact is, we did this ourselves, even those of us who would never vote for him. The people we voted for were paid off with incredibly lucrative insider trading and mysterious and exponential financial gain after leaving office.

The problem for democracy is that it will not survive three more years of such a system. We cannot hold free and fair elections if judges blindly accept the word of Pam Bondi and Kash Patel’s minions. www.democracydocket.com/opinion/two-...
Two cases and the grease that breaks democracy
The obvious lesson many are drawing is that ordinary citizens are more reliable protectors of democracy than judges in black robes.

And fuck "Train Dreams". Haven't seen it. Will never see it. Fuck it, anyway!

Yay, Rose Byrne! If you believed any of the critics who, like the rest of us, are really fucked up about the portrayal of motherhood in a less than flattering light, it's not too late to stream, "If I Had Legs I'd Kick You."

Yay, Eva Victor! "Sorry, Baby" was great and if you believed the (cis, straight, white, male) critics who said it wasn't it's not too late to stream it.

I wrote about Luis Buñuel's Wuthering Heights for Crooked Marquee!
“You can see what’s missing and yearn for its inclusion,” @ceilidhann.bsky.social writes of ‘Abismos de pasión,’ “yet Buñuel's take acutely captures the liminal state its doomed lovers are forced to navigate before they tumble headfirst into their tragic conclusions.”

Sinners has vampires and is more historically accurate than this bullshit
American culture of the 1840’s would have been *very fucking surprised* to see the Irish considered as co-founders.

Elon’s an ahistorical dipshit, but its always worth saying some stuff out loud: if you‘re a fellow Irish-American and you aren’t 100% pro-immigrant, you’re a fucking embarassment.
1/3 What Musk is really referring to here is, of course “race” - that construct that served to define the hierarchies of wealth & power structured by modern colonialism. Like other far right racists though, he uses the word “culture” as a seemingly less pernicious synonym.

I also am baffled that people are assuming this super checkered barely known guy will be super progressive as though we're not living in a post Fetterman universe.
It's nuts that these are the two candidates the respective wings of the Maine Dems have coughed up. I am positive there are, somewhere in the state, a moderate who's not 97 years old and a progressive who doesn't have nazi tattoos.

Both Neil Patrick Harris and Michelle Yeoh have basically said the same thing as Wim Wenders- everyone at Berlinale looks like they are in a hostage video I swear
I love Arundhati Roy's courage, integrity, intelligence, and her artistry as a writer of fiction & nonfiction.

Wim Wenders, the jury chair, on being questioned about Gaza, said filmmakers have to stay out of politics. Roy said a genocide demands a response from everyone, artists included. I agree.

Yet another director I admired, Wim Wenders, folding under cowardice. Many of Wenders’ films were all about the politics of living through societal decline.
WHAT THE ACTUAL FUCK, WIM?!

It's true these spaces are only being used this way because of a noxious combination of money being no object and safety not being on the list of priorities.

But on a deeper level, Sarah is right. Every time we're told something "can't" be done it only means they're not willing.
Someone has sure already made this observation but the fact they can convert all those empty warehouses into prison camps means they could have converted them into housing, community centers, job training centers or, hell, libraries or schools all along. It’s always a matter of will not resources.

Vaccine advocates are struggling to maintain their credibility in the face of bad faith attacks and disinformation. It doesn't help to confuse people about a narrative is s fact or fiction.
I was really troubled by this Atlantic piece. It was presented as reporting, but it seems more accurate to describe it as speculative fiction based on reporting. It seems like a bizarre choice for a journalistic institution to make. www.niemanlab.org/2026/02/the-...
The Atlantic’s Elizabeth Bruenig on her “hypothetical,” heavily reported measles essay

yet? It’s not like the US has a shortage of guns or people who want him dead. It’s US cowardice that keeps him alive.

My main thought I'll add: The works of the most devoted anti-trans "science" journalists, who lean heavily on certain sources to advance whatever point (mostly the transes have gone too far), their works are similarly fictions, hypotheticals, inventions that spring mostly from their fantasies.
Readers shouldn't be tasked with this. Reporters being flip about these lines also makes life harder for all literary nonfiction features writers who do follow the rules.
If you clocked that this was entirely fictional, good for you! I think the confusion for some people shows that it was not marked or explained clearly enough. Even the existing note makes it seem like it was based on composite but real stories, not a "hypothetical."

There was actually a great documentary short (in the ‘90s) about this. Trans and queer people were part of the entertainment at straight wedding receptions in Naples (parodying straight people: at one point they enact a scene of a woman giving birth) and no one batted an eye!
Updating the tracker and I came across this fascinating story of trans and/or non-binary trans life woven into the Catholic practices of Naples, Italy.

For the photo alone I felt like I had to share it - but it's fascinating throughout. From @apnews.com

Catholic rituals blend with Neapolitan folklore in pilgrimage for queer community
MERCOGLIANO, Italy (RNS) — The pews of the Church of the Annunziata in Mercogliano, a town just outside of Naples, were filled with guests wearing lacquered nails, towering wigs and heavy eyelashes.
