Especially jarring that Wim Wenders who came up in the whole movement of artists in Germany in the '70s who were questioning their parents' roles in the war was the one to decree this. Wenders was born in 1945, FFS!
It’s jarring watching celebrities push the “art is apolitical” at the Berlin Film Festival.
America fought fascism in Germany during WWII, and now that it’s on their own soil no one has the courage to speak up.
It’s embarrassing.

I was so impressed with this story about measles in the Atlantic -- the depth of reporting it would take to weave in all these details so fluidly.

Once again pointing out that Mexico City has free, mass vaccinations for measles and that this ad campaign is also on public transit, which *a lot* of people here use (the fare is 30-35 cents). Mexico does not have more money than the US does. The US not doing this is a choice.

LEGISLATIVE COUNSEL'S DIGEST
SB 944, Runner. Special significance days: Ronald Reagan Day.
Existing law designates specited days as having special signiticance, and specities how the days of special significance should be observed in public elementary and secondary schools and educational institutions.
This bill would repeal and recast these provisions.
This bill would express findings and declarations of the Legislature relating to Ronald Reagan. This bill would designate February 6 of each year as Ronald Reagan Day, and would encourage public schools and educational institutions to engage in exercises remembering the life of Ronald Reagan, as specified.
Existing law requires the Governor to proclaim various days in honor of
a person, status, or an event.
This bill would require the Governor to annually proclaim February 6 as
Ronald Reagan Day.
The people of the State of California do enact as follows:
SECTION 1. The Legislature finds and declares all of the following:
(a) Ronald Wilson Reagan was a man of humble background who worked throughout his life serving freedom and advancing the public good, having been employed as an entertainer, union leader, corporate spokesman, Governor of California, and President of the United States.

related to the view among the professional commentariat that only students at ivys and boutique liberal arts colleges actually matter
This elitist view that only rich/Ivy/private school kids should study/have access the liberal arts is so deeply ingrained in so many highly educated Democrats’ views (including tons who majored in the lib arts themselves) that they don’t even realize they hold it, let alone how ugly & elitist it is
(3) But the Democrat view is also bad: while it's fine for people at Princeton and Harvard to study Latin and Sanskrit, public higher education is about job training and $ ROI. There is no room for the idea that curiosity-driven inquiry is a good that should be supported by the public.
