I am a nerd with opinions about video game lore.

Here is my hottest lore take: Trying to make a “canon timeline” for The Legend of Zelda is a fool’s errand. Yes, I know there is an official lore timeline in a collector book out there. Still foolish.

Zelda Wiki was so adverse to the Zelda's many multiple spin-offs and tie-in media in the name of "English" canon that it's only recently that we've discovered many story beats and elements in modern Zelda stemming from Zelda manga.

Meanwhile, Super Mario Wiki abandons canon tier and it's superior.

Zelda Wiki is should not be taken as a serious source. More of a guidebook at best, but never a serious source.

Why? Because I know what site was before 2011. It was literally just a more professional looking fan site that hosted many Zelda timeline theories that ends up becoming untrue.

One of the biggest problems I've encountered with Zelda fans is that many still insist on canon being the same as continuity. That's not how canon works.

Canon literally means to Nintendo "These works are official to us".

This leads to really terrible, convoluted timeline theories that either make no sense or would be retconned out of existence in the near future. And then you see fans twist themselves into knots justifying these issues and also ignore everything else the franchises have to offer. It's rather sad.

Which worked for a time, but leads to issues when applied to larger franchises where stories are written by multiple writers and the goal is to make money. Thus fans use continuity to deem what's canon and not, and some fans became the official writers for these franchises.

That's a bad mindset.

The reason why people think Canon=Continuity is due to the fact that before the Internet, fanfiction looked as convincing as the real deal in terms of books. Sherlock Holmes was infamous for that. So was Star Trek.

So it became necessary to distinguish works by the original creator from fanfiction.
