I gave an opening keynote at the FIDO Alliance’s “Authenticate” conference a few weeks ago! My goal was to explain, as clearly as I can, why passkeys are important and how we should use them to reduce the harm that passwords cause. [1/2]

"It is against the TOS to be talked into suicide by our LLM" is possibly the most evil tech bro thing I've ever read
Additionally, OpenAI argues its not liable because Raine, by using ChatGPT for self-harm, broke its terms of service

On Saturday, I bought a pair of AirPods 4 (no ANC) as a Christmas gift from Amazon for $79.99. Because they’re for Christmas, I picked the slow shipping.

Today, the price has dropped to $69. I cancelled my existing order and re-purchased them at this nicer price. Again, slow shipping. Small wins.

Need something to watch this week? In this keynote I discuss:
1. The thinking behind passkeys; _why_ my team at Apple worked with others to evolve FIDO authentication
2. Using passkeys to replace passwords + traditional 2FA
3. Passkey data export/interoperability (putting "vendor lock-in" to rest)

AI coding has revealed just how many people in our industry don’t appreciate that for any long lived code the cost of initial implementaion is absolutely dwarfed by the cost of maintenance. So much that for long lived projects we can consider: cost of code = cost of maintenance.

One of the changes that OpenAI has made to make ChatGPT safer is a "take a break" nudge. There's something quite interesting about the design here. Which thing does it make you want to click?

They’re doing eugenics right out in the open now, largely because Trump, RFK Jr, Dr Oz and the rest of the fascists have been pushing a eugenicist agenda since they seized control.

It’s white Christian nationalism and it’s dangerous.

Disabled people are not “imperfect”.

We are also not expendable

Journalist challenge: Use “Machine Learning” when you mean machine learning and “LLM” when you mean LLM. Ditch “AI” as a catch-all term, it’s not useful for readers and it helps companies trying to confuse the public by obscuring the roles played by different technologies. 🧪

When I talk to students about public speaking or teaching, I always bring this up: Just tell people when you don't know something! It's remarkably powerful b/c it signals to your audience that you know the boundaries of your expertise and they can trust what you DO talk about.

On macOS, when a web browser uses passkeys in Apple Passwords, it works in two steps:
1. They have no idea what passkeys you have, but they can summon secure system to do passkey auth.
2. They can optionally prompt to know which websites you have passkeys on so they can offer deeper integrations.
Yes, I would love to give Open AI / ChatGPT access to my Passwords and Passkeys
ChatGPT’s Mac browser just got new features, like iCloud passkeys

It's not a warning. It's a threat.

"A nice economy you have there, would be a shame if something were to happen to it."

And all we have to do is keep pretending that the amount of money invested in AI is proportional to the value we're getting from it. Easy enough, just don't anger the mobsters
BBC: Pichai said while AI investment had been an “‘extraordinary moment’, there was some ‘irrationality’ ..

“Asked whether Google would be immune to the impact of the AI bubble bursting, Mr Pichai said .. ‘I think no company is going to be immune, including us.’”
