Today, UCL turns 200. 🎉 For two centuries, our community has opened doors, challenged convention and pushed the boundaries of knowledge across every discipline. Thank you to everyone who’s been part of the UCL story, here’s to the next century. ✨

The moral panic about young men is the new version of “UKIP is winning over former Labour voters” (also a Goodwin argument). Both rely on anecdote more than data, and do significant damage to public understanding of the radical right. Young men are the second *least* pro-Reform group in the UK.

Could we maybe also ask his royal protection officers a few questions as well? Presumably their job is to keep the royals safe from assassination, not to stand by passively whilst their protectees brazenly break the law?

There is profoundly disagreeing with govt policy (policy of two consecutive govts now), there is strongly airing those disagreements - then there is lobbying a foreign govt to pressure ours in changing foreign policy to further your political interests.

I'm not sure what else you can call that.
NEW: Understand Scott Bessent and Nigel Farage discussed Diego Garcia and Chagos during their dinner at Davos. US Treasury Sec believed to have credited Farage for getting this issue in the President’s in-tray and subsequent Trump stance.

If you are in charge of a small team that makes administrative errors, why should we believe you are competent to run the much bigger team that is a government?

the perennial "is this a good replacement for twitter / can it become as big as twitter" discussion is so confused. hominids became bipedal about 7 million years ago. for most of the time since we did not have microblogging. it's not a necessity it's a habit, if it all goes away that's fine

The US backed the Chagos Islands deal last year. The news today, if it can even be called news, is that deals with the current administration aren’t worth very much.

I'm perfectly aware this is by far not the worst thing he's done, but Trump's constant presence - day after day after day - in the lives and headspaces of hundreds of millions of people (billions?), in the US and outside, is so taxing. Every morning, we wake up and have to think about this asshole.

Modest proposal: any minister claiming the government “needs” to be on X should have to read out the top ten comments on their department’s most recent post.
How government engagement on X works. A wholly typical post and a wholly typical reply.

I actually managed to get my kid’s secondary school to come off Twitter and move to Bluesky last year. If any educational establishment is still using it for comms, this should be the straw that breaks the camel’s back

my favorite thing about the benoit blanc movies is that they aren't really about benoit blanc. he is not grappling with demons from his past. we are not getting flashbacks to the husband whose murder he never solved. he just shows up and does his job like mary poppins for homicides

Everyone imitates Tolkien all the time except when it comes to the one way it would really matter: making the protagonist of your novel for children a short, fat, 50-year-old man who doesn't want to do anything.

Everyone’s talking about whether Farage was racist to schoolchildren as a boy when he was racist to schoolchildren THIS WEEK. All the kids who are of reading age can read what he says about them.
John Swinney has responded to Nigel Farage's attack on Glasgow schoolchildren, calling it 'quite simply racist'

Huge respect to the papers for finding both an 88 year old worried about the tax bill on her 6 bedroom Kensington house and a 20 year old fretting about only being able to save £12k a year tax free.
Top work all around. These are not easy case studies to find.

The more I think about the two child limit the crosser I get, and the more pleased that they ditched it. No one decides their family size this way.* Making ordinary people think that this is how other people act is incredibly divisive.

*Otherwise we could easily solve the fertility crisis, right?

A big part of this, I think, and Labour's general failing is caring about the first 15% of people who were going Reform, not the second 15%.

Should have boxed them into being a crank party.
It is genuinely mortifying how the only people I see pointing Reform's links to Russia out are /not/ Labour.

This thread collating the Sheffield Tribune’s brilliant investigation into the spivvy lawyer threatening Yorkshire leaseholders into handing over cash is worth reading before the story goes national.
Excellent and courageous investigative journalism.
The fact that it is (apparently) legal to do this to people is utterly disgusting.
“It broke my heart, that was my savings towards a new car,” one woman who paid Milne tens of thousands of pounds told us. “He has just wiped me out.”

Who is Andrew Milne - the solicitor sending "very aggressive" letters to Sheffield homeowners?
