On the 90s era - I think one difference is that if you were gaming a bunch, you rapidly realized tie-in games were low quality cash grabs 90% of the time. So you quickly stopped buying them. But yea there was still a lot of crap. Though most of us were kids and thus not directly paying for 'em.

Anyways I guess to sum it up, agree with broader point - games are incredible value for time : entertainment!

Then you have live service games and gacha, which both are almost always predatorily designed to make you feel FOMO and try to get you to shell out as much as possible.

Generally, people hate that, even if they still spend on it. And that taints the experience of everything else.

When you shell out $70+ for something and it turns out to be mediocre (especially with how tight money is for people today), I get the anger there. I'd argue the problem is inconsistent quality at that price point, which is less an issue at the Indie price, since 'eh, its just $20' is less of a blow

Part of it, I think, is there's like a 3-tier system in gaming.

Indies/Non-AAA - Generally amazing value for money! Like I have hundreds of hours in Palworld and got that for < $30.
