I've been saying this for a year now: the Democrats have missed a gigantic political opportunity--and, at this point, have failed in an ethical obligation--to create a shadow-government health department that dispenses medically accurate information, guidance, and advice.
WATCH: A CDC panel voted to end the recommendation that newborns receive the hepatitis B vaccine, despite a 99% drop in cases since in the 30 years since it was implemented. Chris Hayes and Brandy Zadrozny react. www.youtube.com/watch?v=6REM...

The Newark Airport loudspeaker voice just said something about "lost and found technology solutions," and it's really much too early in the day to have this kind of corpo-speak blared into my brain.

it is impossible to overstate the extent to which this country is now being run by people you would leave a party rather than talk to for five minutes
they hate music, they hate art, they hate artists, they hate pop, they hate the video games they play, they hate the movies they watch, like, they're just all the worst fucking people you've ever met, none of them believe in anything

Running in 11 degree weather this morning (please clap), I was reminded of the time back in 2018 when I proudly hauled myself into Prospect Park for my 3rd consecutive run in teens-weather, only to be passed by a runner in shorts. SHORTS.

A crippling sense of impostor syndrome (+ a terrible job market) tanked my future in academics, so all of this - the bad writing, the Vanity Fair gig, & now "I don't know how to responsibly handle this on camera" - makes me so mad, not so much for me but for legit writers who cannot get published.
@timmiller.bsky.social: "He's being nominated to HHS Secretary…You had information that you could have shared…and you didn't share anything about him. Why? Did you still love him?"

I was basking in the beauty of an autumn sunset on Riddarholmen in Stockholm in 2011 when a tour group on Segways comically crashed like dominoes behind me. You could not pay me enough money to get on one, much less convince me that this was at any point The Future.
Younger people who didn't witness it cannot fathom the hype around the Segway. Every news station agreed it would revolutionize the entire social fabric of the Earth. That all future humans would divide history between the savage days of the past, and the soon to be new era of zoom zoom scoot scoot.

Dan Fogelberg's Same Old Lang Syne showed up on a Spotify xmas playlist, which ... ok, but man, there was that weird moment in the 80s when songs really dug deep into the Storytelling Journey. (cf Chicago's Hard Habit to Break)

Every Tom Stoppard story is better than the last, but this one might be the absolute best.
This is why I support freedom of expression.

Appropriately, it is the chaos of a system that supports free speech that gives rise to the grand process of democratic self-governance and the ideally upward arc of human progress and flourishing.

Yesterday a Stoppard play, today a tweet.

There is a Dem centrist/leadership position that seems to be not just "when we are back in power we will hold ourselves to a higher standard," but also "and that position is incompatible with holding current wrongdoers to account, because we are better than that" - and it's just flatly insane to me.

This Defector piece is wonderful, not only because it captures something beautiful & difficult about running as you get older, but the comments section is full of folks also digging in deep; there's something so poignantly communal about this funny activity some of us are fortunate to be able to do.

There's a trail near our house where during a run I'll sometimes encounter the local HS cross country team, always w/ a wistful moment of envy (young knees!). This Sat as I crossed paths with the fastest of the bunch, he smiled broadly & gave me a thumbs up, a sweet little gesture. Thanks, kid!

The White House’s new anti-media website includes denunciations of:

-ABC, which bribed the president
-CBS, which bribed the president and moved away from fact-based journalism trying to appeal to him and his fans
-WaPo, which spiked a Harris endorsement and tilts coverage in Trump’s favor

Fools.
