Let's all go to the gym to get big little mice.
A reminder of one of the loveliest pairs of siblings in the dictionary: ‘muscle’ and ‘mouse’. To the Roman imagination, the flexed biceps of a (typically naked) athlete resembled a rodent scuttling under the skin. ‘Musculus’, in Latin, means ‘little mouse’.

No joke: I got angry hate mail today for writing an obituary of a Black woman scientist—because the person felt she did didn’t deserve the recognition.

Which just makes me want to share it again: www.nature.com/articles/d41...
Gladys Mae West obituary: mathematician who pioneered GPS technology
She made key contributions to US cold-war science despite facing huge barriers as a Black woman.

Had a horrible dream last night where someone spilt a load of bleach over themselves. I tried to search the best way to treat a chemical burn but every search engine I tried just gave me mangled and useless AI answers.
I'm defo not going to turn to AI for therapy on all this weirdness!

Good morning.

I wish our politicians would read more.

Perhaps if they did, they'd have more empathy and emotional intelligence.

Just sent Keir Starmer a copy of

Leonard and Hungry Paul by Rónán Hession.

Peter Mandelson may wish to note the above.

Certainly sums up my January!
Somebody already did this for 2025 (& I would give credit if I could find the post). But in fact January deserves its own censure from Lady Catherine de Bourgh:

I take no leave of you, January. I send no compliments to your mother. You deserve no such attention. I am most seriously displeased.

My first Anna Sharpe thriller is out in paperback today so here’s the obligatory photograph of me looking awkward while holding a copy of my own book. Please for godssakes buy it. It got great reviews. People like it. And if you hate it, you can always use it to swat flies.

Some good news to focus on in these horrible times. 🌱
This tech could make green hydrogen at the same cost as brown (from fossil fuels) - that would be transformational for Hydrogen and the often discussed but never getting closer - Hydrogen economy. If these guys pull this off at scale, then I reckon we’re underway.

This looks delicious! There have been a lot of bugs going around here so I might make this soup to declare war on them.
There is, however, a chance it will make Thing 1 return to uni earlier than planned. 😂
#RecipeOfTheDay comes from The Royal Marsden Cancer Cookbook. I was asked to contribute, and it was an honour to do so in support of this great hospital. Obviously, I make no curative claims for my soup, but I can promise it provides comfort and tastes delicious www.nigella.com/recipes/caul...

Happy New Year everyone!
I was pleased to see the sun go down on 2025 but, as always, it's important to remember the good things that happened as we look to 2026.
Let's make it a good one!
