This is what infuriates me, maybe more than the Renee Good shooting, which could be plausibly described as a terrible act by a single officer. They are flooding our streets with secret police and heavily armed military convoys! It’s naked incitement and then they go “good heavens why are you so mad”

They deployed ten times as many agents to a city 40% the size and then had them drive around in military convoys publicly snatching random pedestrians before launching tear gas. Also, they shot a lady in the face
Vance marvels at how much more “chaotic” operations have been here compared to even LA and Chicago, “It is unique to this city. What is it about Minneapolis that it has become so chaotic?”

Sir, maybe it is that you shot a woman in the face.”

NEW: Netanyahu called Trump yesterday and asked him to hold off on attacking Iran. During the June war, Iran hit Israel with many missiles, killing some civilians. Qatar, Oman, Saudi Arabia and Egypt have also asked the US not to attack Iran. Gift link to our story: www.nytimes.com/2026/01/15/u...

protestors have painted what appears to be a tunnel on the side of the mountain, causing ICE agents to run into the mountain at full speed.

disgusting.

I want to reiterate this (and more press outlets should be stressing) that the people ICE is savagely dragging away are guilty of something on the scale of jaywalking

But I was told that words were not violence?

“A family was caught in clashes between protesters and law enforcement” is certainly a way to describe this when the family says cops threw tear gas literally into their car and it made them want to join the protests

Got a tip that the Curbed Seattle archives are down. Super bummed. This is always a possibility with the State of Things but it hits a little different when it was your baby for a few years.

He... knows that the history has always been there, right?
Don’t get me wrong, he also objects strenuously to a shifted emphasis from “Western history” to [gasp] “global history.”

lol both things he calls "tyrannous invasions of private life" are very much part of his job
The reason this Harvard history professor decided he was done with one of the best and most privileged jobs in the world was, in his own words, because he was forced to lecture in a mask during peak Covid.

I’m not making this up.

I have abandoned several corporate-track Stardew Valley saves
even new vegas can't make the evil playthrough interesting, and let me tell you: if you think you're making a better-written game than new vegas, you're almost certainly wrong

that said, i really enjoyed my demonic playthrough of Wrath of the Righteous and have heard good things about lich
I don't know why i always end up playing the Paragon/good side in RPGs, even though I sometimes plan to do the darker/bad choices

it happens every time.

USPS quietly changed its postmark rules — mail is no longer dated when you drop it off. The “official” date is when it hits automated sorting — sometimes days later

Which could have major implications for mail in voting — it’s a clever way to disenfranchise voters that’s going largely overlooked

I think what websites don’t understand is you don’t want to “earn a fan badge.” And when they send you a “congratulations,” it’s mortifying and you immediately stop going to the site.

I got accepted to Willamette's MFA program!
Every year around this time I do the same thread and it has been a lot of fun.

Tell me something you did in 2025 that you're proud of that you want everyone to know about. Did you write a book? Did you get a promotion? Did you survive the year?

I want to spend the end of the year celebrating you.
