You could also try some template ones (if you have stencils), or have people draw the outline of whatever they want on a blank sheet, and then cut through both the book page and the sketch.

You could offer a setup with lights (an overhead projector would probably be great) -- people could pose for a really traditional one, or you could make transparencies with some designs for people to choose from.

Something like www.rct.uk/resources/ma... or www.instructables.com/Creating-Silhouettes. My thought was that you would cut the design out of the page and back it with black construction paper or similar.

Book folding (try searching for free measure-mark-fold patterns) will help you use up lots of hardcover volumes. If you have antique-looking books doing old-school silhouette art is quite fun, too. If you're down for the possibility of glue mishaps, snowflakes and wreaths can be fun for all ages.

Hey digipres folks! Any of you know any good near-duplicate identification tools? Right now I'm mostly focused on images (University photographer files) but I'm interested in any type of content if you've got a favorite! GUIs preferred but I know enough Python to make a menace of myself as well

Exactly, but with the added benefit of having the option to BOTH retain the original format and migrate to another if you want.

I feel like it's one of those things like appraisal -- not necessarily a difficult concept, but one highly resistant to being theorized into articles and book chapters. Too much is dependent on the needs and priorities of the creator, the future user, and the collecting institution.

*knit, not knot. Unless you're talking about the time I tried to do a long gradient color-change on 2aat socks -- that was both knotting and knitting 😆
sarahbarsness.bsky.social
There are also LOTS of ways to knot socks! If you do your first pair and like the nature of the project (duration to knit, small needles, etc) then try different styles! I started with cuff-down but now I prefer toe-up; I started on DPNs but now I do them 2-at-a-time on 1 long circular.

It's very much a 'trust the process' thing the first time you do any new heel construction! If you want to build confidence *fast* and/of you don't want to worry about fit issues in the leg (wide calves, etc) ankle socks are the way to go. You save a lot of time by just skipping all those leg rows.

I think the laddering tips are already covered, and needle management with DPNs (I think I put the left side of each needle down and the right side up so that it keeps things stable). Heel turns are weird so imho a really well-written pattern is very important for your first pair.

I love that design! Do you happen to have a link for where I could get one of those? Either finished items or 3D print files would work for me.

Happy 71st Birthday to Ruby Bridges, who at the age of 6 desegregated the New Orleans public schools.

She’s younger than 30 senators and our last two presidents—and only 7 years older than Barack Obama.

The past isn’t past.

Excited to finally announce the release of my first ever book, and the first ever book from we here press. It is a pocket-size guide to my archival theories and experiences in the form of essays- some you may have heard in part as lectures, some which are unpublished until now.

www.weherepress.org
Book cover. The top of the image is covered in overlapping black&white and sepia photographs of Black pas from the early to mid 20th century. Below that, against a seafoam green or robin's egg blue (depends on your view I suppose!), the book's title "The House Archives Built & Other Thoughts on Black Archival Possibilities" is printed in black. There is a small white rectangle inset that reads "Dorothy Berry"

Nostalgia is a toxic impulse but also I miss the time when tech trends were things like "let's put everything in a translucent colored plastic case" instead of "let's add software to everything that lies and also accelerates climate change"
