During the piracy discussion yesterday, someone was like, I'm not a thief & you're mocking poor people.

Then, after being reminded of the existence of libraries, ended the conversation with a passionate insistence that they will continue to 'steal' whatever they wanted.

Case closed.

Good morning to Brazilian reporter Manuela Borges, who’s been waiting eleven years for this petty moment. ❤️ 🇧🇷

Fermi's Progress - Season Pass by Chris Farnell - Scarlet Ferret
The Fermi is the Earth's first and last faster-than-light-spaceship. The last, because it turns out its engine vaporises entire star systems in its wake. And nobody knows how to turn it off.

And in case all of that (and an exclusive look @mrjalco.bsky.social's concept art for the mysterious alien lander featured on the cover) isn't enough, we have ANOTHER top secret bonus extra in the works, which we'll announce when I need an excuse to post again.

This one's genius!

I LOVE seeing what authors do with their ebooks!

Released a series as novellas, then introduced a Season Pass to buy them together with a small discount. Then, once the series is complete, including the omnibus edition with the Season Pass.

While the current discourse is bleak, indies still rule!

Asked where she thinks people go when they die, our daughter described a place surrounded by mist and spiky mountains.

She was describing Mount Olympus as seen in the opening of Clash of the Titans (1981). A favourite of hers.

Asked where bad people go:

"The same place, but nobody talks to them."

I once asked a bookseller at a large indie store how many people would have to buy a book for it to get the attention of the store buyer and cause an additional order and they said: Three.
I see some book piracy discourse, and, to make a positive argument in favor of buying books, your marginal ability to influence what books get published and support the careers of writers you like is massive compared to most other forms of media.

Do you know how much of the cover price goes to a trad published writer? About 10-15%.

The various types of indie pub get a higher percentage (but have to do more work with virtually zero publicity budget).

How many publishers have been put out of business by piracy? Not a lot. Writers, tho'...

Literally buying one copy of a book at your local indie bookstore can mean the difference in whether they buy future books from that author.

I usually start with one or two copies of a new (to us) title and if it sells out quickly I order three or five more and if THOSE sell out quickly I'm upping my next order to ten. So yeah. This is very true.

There is NO FUCKING EXCUSE for this to be happening.

I had a baby die in my arms of pertussis some fifty years ago. It was a HORRIBLE death. But my fellow nurses said to me, "It's almost stamped out now, they're all getting the shots, we won't be seeing this again."

HOW THE FUCK ARE WE HERE. 😡
A third infant has died in Kentucky, KYDPH adds:

“These are Kentucky’s first pertussis deaths since 2018. None of the infants nor their mothers received the recommended pertussis vaccinations during pregnancy or early infancy.”

People were gaining a language, sense of history and set of conceptual tools that delegitimised both white supremacy *and the wider systems of capitalism and colonialism-imperialism* that it's bound up with.

The 2020 racial reckoning threatened the legitimacy of *the entire social order*.
"My mentor always tells me, 'Kim, dogs don’t bark at parked cars." They’re coming after critical race theory, 1619, intersectionality because these ideas mobilized people. They gave them the language to actually articulate what they were seeing with their own eyes," says Kimberlé Crenshaw.

I can’t wait for PEN to comment on the Israeli intelligence forces storming the Palestinian National Theatre in Jerusalem and threatening the whole cast of the children’s performance and the audience if they didn’t leave in five minutes.

Because they won’t.
