I was talking to someone who works in a charity shop (thrift store for Americans) and she said that they usually get toys in January when people have a big clear out but that they'll often have parents coming in looking for stuff for Christmas now.

It occurred to me this morning, waking from a particularly bad nightmare, that many people have no real experience or understanding of what truly cruel power hungry people can and will do.

part of the reason i am genuinely irritated with the gAI/AGI cult is because there is real societal benefits in using ML techniques in medical care + weather analysis, and instead people get annoyed with anything that gets lumped in with the plagiarism machine
