Braid Estate update:

The changes to revert back to rat-running are now not due to be implemented on the ground until Jan 2026 – a full 5 years after they were first implemented. 5 years of quiet streets, that keep children safe, & much loved by residents

“The Travelling Safely schemes have been in place for almost five years, improving safety and enabling more people, notably families, to feel safe to get about by bike . There is no measurable impact on congestion or traffic flow, and no rising toll of injuries to pedestrians, cyclists or drivers."

Do you know if Police Scotland and other emergency services get to see the Road Safety Audit as part of the Statutory consultation?
sheenanimmo.bsky.social
The diagram in the ETRO isn’t reverting back to the current modal filter options, it looks like the revised option 1 design from the consultation.

Walking rates are up, according to today's National Travel Survey data - but the government is failing to meet the target of 55% primary school children walking to school.

The problem? Streets are not safe for walking.

So much change is needed to make Scotland a better place for walking/wheeling...great to see this highlighted for the #Holyrood2026 elections!

We'll be amplifying this message through our call for various specific measures over the coming months.

1/6 As Scotland looks to the future, we know walking is one of the best ways to address some of the greatest challenges of our time.

So together with @livingstreets.bsky.social we’ve published The Power of Walking – A Walking and Wheeling Manifesto for 2026.

Not only does Edinburgh Council refuse to implement safe active travel on Colinton Road, in nearby Braid Estate it is removing part of the Quiet Route to let cars rat run through residential streets again. Council officers pointed out that this went against transport hierarchy but the TEC ignored.
sheenanimmo.bsky.social
Drivers often ignore 20mph speed limits but on Braid Avenue the average speed reduced from 28mph to 18mph when the current Quiet Route with modal filters was introduced.

So why is Edinburgh Council determined to remove the safe streets that we’ve enjoyed for 5 years?

Have you heard of the 3-30-300 🌳 rule?

Everyone should be able to:

🌲 See at least 3 trees from their home
🌳 Have 30% tree canopy cover in their neighbourhood
🍃 Live within 300 meters of a high-quality green space
An infographic illustrating the '3-30-300 Rule' for urban greenery. It features stylized drawings of trees and a bench, accompanied by three key guidelines: having 3 large trees visible from your home or workplace, ensuring 30% tree canopy cover in your neighbourhood, and living within 300 meters of a publicly accessible green space

Stage2 Road Safety Audit for Braid Estate Quiet Route flagged 20 safety issues across 5 themes: cycle lane hazards, junction safety, pedestrian crossings, design risks & signage. Worryingly despite the experimental & temporary plans safety recommendations include tree removal & drain readjustment.

If the E in ETRO stands for experimental, surely the council can’t remove the iconic cherry trees to make the new temporary design for Braid Avenue safe? Surely it’s safer and cheaper to keep the current Quiet Route? @stephenjenkinson.bsky.social @chasbooth.bsky.social

Surely it’s time for Edinburgh Council to ditch the plans to remove the successful Quiet Route in the Braid Estate?
The Council expects 4,000 more vehicles a day (up 67%) and admits the new designs “don’t have the same level of safety when crossing the road”.

🚨Scotland’s 20% traffic reduction target is back on track.

We welcome this renewed focus — less cars on our roads means better air quality, safer streets and a more efficient network.

Now we need action, not just words.

This week residents were told by the Council that the new designs for the Braid Estate “don’t have the same level of safety when crossing the road” as the current design. So why do they still want to spend c£400k making our streets more dangerous by favouring drivers?
livingstreetsedi.bsky.social
Very disappointing that Edinburgh Councillors today approved a capital programme which really doesn’t give priority to walking - pedestrian crossings, wider pavements, road safety, etc.😞
Rather, various walking elements are relegated to a “rolling programme”…
livingstreetsedi.bsky.social
Are you tired of waiting for the green man? Of pavement clutter, of really narrow pavements around busy parts of the capital? So are we. And we're really disappointed the council won't prioritise pedestrian-focused projects from the City Mobility Plan.

We are one of 50 organisations to support the Joint Active Travel Manifesto for 2026.

By prioritising walking and wheeling, we can transform our communities, create healthier environments, and make active travel accessible to everyone.

There are lots of modal filters in Edinburgh. Why is the council so determined to remove the 3 in the Braid Estate (highlighted yellow) at a cost of c£400k so that around 4,000 more drivers can speed through our residential streets?
sheenanimmo.bsky.social
I’d like the beautiful cherry blossom trees on Braid Avenue to be protected from being cut back to accommodate the trial of unnecessary, unpopular and expensive cycle lanes. As you can see from the council document, Braid Avenue is in the Morningside Conservation Area.

75% of residents on Braid Ave supported the filters and low traffic neighbourhood

A lot of the “unpopularity” came from a vocal minority of drivers from outside the area who wanted to continue rat running, to the detriment of the community

And “controversy” manufactured by politicians & media
sheenanimmo.bsky.social
The TEC could have tested the popularity of the current layout by including it as an option in the consultation.

Funding challenges mean difficult choices for Edinburgh - but remember this committee:

✋Opted to remove a low traffic neighbourhood & replace it with an expensive bike lane

🅿️ Turned down c£14mn per annum from a Workplace Parking Levy

🚷Spent active travel budget on Dalmahoy road junction

Thanks. So it looks like after 4 years of lower traffic volumes and safer streets the council are going ahead with a further 18 months of trying out another design to please the rat-running drivers while making it difficult and dangerous for local families to cycle or walk to schools.
sheenanimmo.bsky.social
I couldn’t see the Greenbank to Meadows Quiet Route on these lists. Is it part of a wider project, or are the plans for the Braid Estate section too far developed to be revisited?
sheenanimmo.bsky.social
Hard to believe the Council wants to remove rather than improve the safe infrastructure in the Braid Estate which has reduced traffic and encouraged cycling and walking.
ladymelchet.bsky.social
Regressing to pre-Covid road layouts on Braid Estate is no answer. Modal filters work - less traffic, safer streets and more pleasant. ECC’s new plans feel like an over egged pudding. Fix what needs fixing but keep it simple, cost effective, green and in keeping with the area’s character.

Concerned about plans for cycle lanes on Braid Avenue that could mean cutting back the iconic tree canopy - a key part of Morningside’s character. This is a temporary trial (ETRO) so why risk permanent damage. We need an independent tree impact assessment and a restoration plan before work starts
sheenanimmo.bsky.social
14 months ago the council voted to spend £200-400k ripping out the Braid Estate section of the Quiet Route, despite their own reports stating this is expected to significantly increase traffic volume in residential streets. Surely making current safe layout permanent is better and cheaper solution?
applefranca.bsky.social
The mound? Braid estate debacle? That is the council actually spending money it doesn't have making things *less* safe and *actively increasing* car use
