Hi, wave of new people (exodus from Twitter / X?). Academic and research interests in the bio.

Warning: this is the least exciting account on Bluesky. Cakes and pastries, rural walks, exploring Sweden & Norway, apple and orchard observations, weird stuff the cat does, text adventures, um that's it?
Naps are good.

It is 17th January (Gregorian), so it is Old Twelvey and therefore time to Wassail. Somerset (1979) as interpreted by the news...

Morris Dancing is an unrelated thing but, as per usual, open a keg or barrel of anything and a troupe will suddenly appear.

It's 17th January (Old Twelfth Night) and what's better than
a traditional Wassail. Yes, more of that later when it's dark...

BISCUITS FOR THE BISCUIT GOD

Off on the daily long(er) walk; 6.8 mile stroll this afternoon.

This morning was also (green) bin recycling day, so there are bins, bins everywhere. Favourite design so far:

I think you already know that you should join. In fact, I suspect it was you who screamed.
January 16, 2026 at 1:33 PM
One of the neighbours, or someone nearby, just yelled

BISCUITS FOR THE BISCUIT GOD

and then silence. No other shouting, no other sound.

Wondering if there is some local branch or sect or group of pagans I am completely unaware of, what their rituals are, and whether I should apply to join.

Still finding it weird to hear the chimes of the ice cream van at {checks} 8:36 in the morning.

Also, maybe now is a good time to remind folks about my
@ox.ac.uk starter pack of Oxford University Institutions.

If you find a department that is lurking somewhere and needs adding, there are still a few spots left to fill on this list.

(1/3) Morning 4 mile walk. Grey, damp, everything damp, but not cold through the many layers I've swaddled myself into.

Browns. In this season, browns dominate, nature throwing on a 1970s fashion aesthetic. Wood, soil (mud), churned verges, dead leaves, more mud, mud that gets everywhere, horses!

The Greenland thing, even as it looms ever more likely, is so absurd to me that I struggle to even look at it. Like somebody suddenly saying they're going to invade Wales. What?! No you're not.

Latte, and a sultana scone (rhymes with 'own' because Malvern), were achieved.

This concludes uphill walking for today.
January 14, 2026 at 12:53 PM
Still walking uphill. Malvern is an Escher picture. Ah another sign.

{reads sign}

That's good, persuasive, marketing. But I need caffeine. Moving on...

Walking up, forever up, into Malvern. Ah an independent coffee place.

{reads sign}

Okay; bit weird. Moving on...

Off to get the train to Great Malvern to hike up the Malvern Hi...

{feels the cold slam into my face}

Off to get the train to Great Malvern to drink a hot latte in a warm cafe.

I've been listening to this as the train pulls through darkened Sussex, the sun rising to reveal London suburbs drenched with fog, red lights on high-rise blocks visible in the distance. It's the perfect soundtrack for that kind of thing. A gorgeous piece of music.
