The indifferent, self-seriousness air people like Gavin Newsom and his most knee-jerk supporters bring to conversations about taking away rights from trans people is monstrous but it also makes it frustratingly clear how few of them have ever understood their principles well.

Sometimes it feels like the lesson older white Democrats took from the Civil Rights movement is that the important, praiseworthy thing is to be involved in deciding who gets to have civil rights, rather than making sure that everyone does.

Which is hilarious because I know I've seen Bluesky team members throwing around context collapse as a buzzword to show they're very srrsly considering all the known problems of social media. Yeah ok, first give your mods at least as much context as the average poster

I was thinking that 12 year olds stealing a sword from a local museum seemed like a plot from a TV show, then realized I was thinking of the King of the Hill episode about stealing Santa Anna's prosthetic leg, where of course it's adults that do the stealing

Agreed, bad analogy. And I think it misjudges who will have the loudest, longest complaints about the impact of AI on art (rather than on employment). Hating cameras didn't last too long, hating what artists did after cameras is still common in the sort of conservative circles that now embrace AI

I paid attention to the Humane AI Pin's development for awhile because it at least seemed like the sort of project where the team must've had interesting challenges to solve, but then it came out and it was clear they hadn't solved any of the challenges
