The Government lurching to the right was 100% inevitable after the presidential election; this is how they deal with failure rather than any form of reflection.

But I'm fairly shocked at the speed and vigour with which they've done it, not letting the attempted murder of refugees get in their way

79% of homes sold in Dublin this year were bought by landlords, 75% by large landlords. About 1 in 5 TDs are landlords.

This is disgusting dog whistling. The problem has never been people seeking asylum. The problem is people seeking to endlessly profit from folks just looking for a home.
🗣️ "The one thing that there is a problem with is housing right across the state, and the more that come to seek asylum, the more pressure it puts on that system.” - Fianna Fáil Minister of State Timmy Dooley

"YOU'RE TRYING TO SHUT DOWN DEBATE ON IMMIGRATION"

If your standard of debate on immigration leads to IPAS centres being set on fire with people inside, then yes, I am trying to shut down your debate on immigration.

Probably not a good example to show the people that menacingly picket your house that that's a tactic that works.
Listening to Tánaiste Simon Harris's comments on the way into Cabinet this morning - accusing parties on the left of the 'extraordinary' move of 'trying to shut down debate' on immigration.

Every minute without a strong statement from the Irish government about the arson and attempted murder in Drogheda is another minute of silent acquiescence to the far right - by remaining silent, the govt is making it very clear which side they are on.
Everyone who is here, belongs here.

Simon Harris is a coward and a bully who would rather scapegoat innocent communities of vulnerable people rather than face up to the failures of either his government or himself as a leader, a Cabinet minister and a human being. Couldn't think less of him and have no problem saying it.

And don't get me started on Jim O'Callaghan. A Minister for Justice spreading misinformation in the aftermath of an arson attack on women and children. Shouldn't have to resign. Should be fired. Gross incompetence, at best. Spare me the lot of them.

Every far-right riot and protest that was tolerated, every racist dog whistle from public reps, every bit of hate and misinformation allowed to spread by social media companies, all led to this moment in Drogheda last night where someone felt emboldened enough to try to burn children alive.

Wild thing looking at the NY mayor election is that the Cuomo campaign appears to consist entirely of AI generated deep fake videos of his opponents. Someone is 100% going to copy that here and we need legislation to be ahead of this

Just don’t think you can disconnect the government taking an increasingly hostile rhetorical line to migrants this week with that horrific attack on the IPAS centre in Drogheda. If you tell these people they have a point, they will escalate their violence.

You cannot appease the far right on migration. You cannot appease the far right on fucking anything. You have to oppose them and stamp them the fuck out.

Strongest condemnation from a local politician so far coming from Labour's Ged Nash - underlining how close we may have been to having several lives lost in Drogheda overnight as a result of this attack.

This is the consequence of pandering to the far right - they feel untouchable. People could have died. They could literally have murdered people.
Justice Minister confirms arson attack on IPAS building in Drogheda last night.

"Fireworks were thrown into the building, causing a fire and putting lives at risk. This was a terrifying ordeal for the women and children living there, a number of whom were taken to hospital."

Setting fire to a building when people, children, are inside should be investigated like it's an attempted murder because that's what it fucking is.

The far right will eventually kill someone or lots of someones if our pathetic government does not act now to stop them … first step would be for politicians, including Government ministers, to stop repeating far right racist rhetoric #speirgorm
Firefighters rescued five people, including three children under ten, from the top floor of an Ipas centre in Drogheda last night after a major fire.

Gardaí have preserved the scene while the cause of the blaze is investigated.

Everything I know about Enoch Burke, Conor McGregor, Maria Steen (and countless others)... I know against my will. They are constantly driving the national narrative.
So much of our media is dominated by a format of asking "Does this dipshit have a point?. We'll discuss for 3 weeks".

I 100% endorse this message. The spoiled votes are a 3rd or 4th order story in this election and disproportionate attention and airtime is a measure of the level of editorial discomfort with talking about Connolly’s success and FF/FG failure.
Catherine Connolly got more votes than any other president in history - any pol corr or commentator trying to convince you that the story is actually the spoiled votes is showing you their whole arse, and should be treated accordingly.

Thinking about the influence welded by news media.
Monstered Connolly and she scored a record share of first preferences.
But push the Steen grievance campaign, and there's a spoiled vote bounce.
That's who they are now, that's who they still reach.
And that's going to be a problem for everyone.

Amazing result in Tipp North for Catherine Connolly when you consider that all three TDs were against her. Commentators on about disenfranchisement should look at that carefully. It's not the spoiled votes that are interesting, it's who the Connolly vote will go to next #GE. #Áras25
