I’m proud of my solo game dev work this year, to say one good thing about 2024. A few script rewrites away from a playable demo
Run a coffee shop, solve mysteries and defeat enemies in breakfast-based combat in a DS-inspired RPG/VN hybrid

I think ppl are getting caught up by “bad decisions that feel emotionally true”. Remember this is a single slide in a 45min talk!
The wider point was that you should prioritise whether the character would make that decision over whether it’s the best decision, and imo it was well explained

The Giggle is my fav recent episode of Doctor Who. It’s so cool how they followed up on a plot thread they’d not touched for 60 years, and you can’t even watch the original story because the tapes were destroyed
After "film trilogy that dropped a critical plot point exclusively via timed Fortnite event" and "video game series whose story only makes sense if you're aware of the events of a canon pachinko machine", I feel like there are whole frontiers of user-hostile narrative design waiting to be explored.

Evidently I gotta watch more TV because I really like the sympathetic villain backstory episodes that happen near the ends of seasons and I’ve not noticed it getting overused 🫣

Genuinely such an interesting observation that I never even thought about
Super Mario World has an extremely eclectic art style whereby many enemies are drawn in completely different ways. Development files reveal Mario went through many stylistic changes; it is possible that all the enemies were made to fit Mario, but at different points in time.
