Best Indian food (outside of India): at a strip mall in Anchorage, Alaska.
Here’s a topic outside the news.

What’s the most unlikely place you’ve ever had the best particular food or drink you’ve ever had?

Like, not the best steak at the world’s top steakhouse. Something weirder.

Best burger I’ve ever had? Fresno airport.

Best cup of coffee? Crater Lake Lodge.

Not that you would know it from the headline, but the actual story here is "we made them pay us some money for copies rather than scrape the site in a really annoying way"...

my grandmother & her brother grew up in Meerut & I met him once when I was 12. He was a mathematician, just retired from the university, who spent the whole day playing cards & mathematical games with me.

I never saw him again; it was a single intersection of two lives. but I think of him often.
I've been trying to make nankhatai, which is a specialty of the town my grandmother grew up in. they should have pista on the top, not almonds, but I like them anyway.

Andrew has this lovely little thread of observations, now we’re back from India 💚🤍🧡
Back from Delhi. This was I think my seventh trip there since 2011. Interesting to think about how it's changed.

I’m home after a long journey and so far my biggest problem is no way to watch Indian Masterchef.

Those admiring this lovely handkerchief dress— it was made for me by @oddtypeofdragon.bsky.social, who does indeed make dresses to order!
I went skating in Delhi today and it was such a good experience! Such smooth ice and not being the only brown on it goes down well.

I’m in a giant mall in Gurgaon, watching a large Indian family all looking frantically for the Harajuku Japanese cafe. The littlest sister, mochi is her favourite! It must be found!

I’m sorry to be missing the snow and ice in the UK, here it is a smoggy 5 degrees but it feels much colder.

Watching a beautiful black kite rise and dip outside my window, while all the little birds decide to be elsewhere (also much mourning in the squirrel community)

This is one of my most favourite books. I read it in March 2020 and it was intensely sustaining.

I am in Delhi! Wild kites swooping at the balcony and very cold. It’s good to be back.

I return to the bosom of my people (briefly) on 1 Jan. And I love a new year in Delhi, I really do. But the paperwork.

I learned to ice skate. Had been on ice skates all of twice before 1 Jan 2025. Working on two foot turns, crossovers and backward stroking now.

Reading & writing has kept me alive this year.

Somehow, it’s been my most productive year as an author.
