I'm rewatching The Good Place, which I think is the best tv show of the last, idk, two decades, and seeing a resonance with Pluribus.

this is an extremely adorable book, really, do spend 99p on the experience of reading it one chapter a day in December! Llin's work is substantial, like cream and chocolate and other nice things with heft: she's not silly or slight, she gives you beautiful romance that sticks.
For one week only, get my F/F romance advent calendar novella for 99p!

Bethan, dragged back to her Welsh village, is desperate to escape before Christmas until she meets new neighbour Mali.

One chapter per day from 1-25 December - snap it up now to start reading on Dec 1!

So I’m aware that if I were ten years older I’d have had years of buying a Guardian every day and thinking nothing of it. i feel like journalism is a good thing right now to spend money on & I’m considering what.

oh also I thought I'd give After Hours at Dooryard Books a try, cos everyone's all, this one isn't terminally cosy, and I enjoyed a lovely chapter before sudden babyfic.

I have a miserable cold, didn't go in today and missed skating & I'm caught up on Pluribus so all is left is to grump, miserably.

hello, new followers. I allegedly post about reading and writing, but more often these days about weather and public transport.

my own last book was You Are Here, a short story collection, inc "Wish You Were Here", a little SF novella I've mentioned elsewhere: www.generalist.org.uk/iona/books-a...

Eight Days is a fantastic, Hugo-winning podcast, & this episode features me as special guest! Becca and Emily are the smartest people around, & kindly invited me to talk about my fave, The Lives of Christopher Chant, & also bureaucracy, & colonisation of mind, & a bit about cricket. do check it out.

oh, this really sucks. there's nothing else like the brilliant, morbid Deadlands on the SFF landscape, & while it's continuing, the rest is a terrible loss.

(I've been pubbed there just once, here: psychopomp.com/deadlands/is... - tho they sent a non-form poetry rejection once that rly helped)

to be clear, this has come up because Quatermass is meeting with his secret source about the aliens possessing civil servants at one of the fancy new coffee bars they all go to*

On my way out to Ely on a train that stops at Cambridge North, aka the station that if it had opened 6 months earlier would have changed the course of my life.

Despite being disproportionately into Quatermass and the Pit (1958) for someone born not in that year, I've only just now watching the Hammer horror remake, and my god 1967 seems to have been a time.

It ended up taking 1 hour 15. In the rain. Urgh.
I know that some people have cars and on the whole that is sub-optimal but sometimes it’s pouring with rain and your 2.7 mile journey is going to take 50 minutes

Iona is a fantastically good writer.
So I wrote two books. both are set in London, in winter, in 2021. One is an alternate future history, a sparse love story where a spad and civil servant work on Brexit together and fall unwillingly in love; the other is a sports anime, a post-pandemic f/f romance. here they both are:

From Quatermass and the Pit (1958):

"If we found out that our Earth was doomed, a thousand years from now, or a hundred, what would we do about it?"

"Nothing. Just go on fighting each other as usual."

they just put that on tv in 1958. I love this, I love Quartermass, I love his insane prescience.
did you not know that one of my favourite things in the entire world is a terrifying black-and-white BBC SF horror serial from 1958? well.
