Went for a hike this afternoon to see the Potomac River, and it did not disappoint. A mushroom I spotted along the way was doing its best impression of a carnation.

I'm repeating this as dogwoods are more broadly in flower. On the left with white bracts (not petals) is a flowering dogwood inflorescence, containing many flowers. The closeup shows the individual flowers. We can learn a lot just by looking at nature carefully.

What can you learn about an owl from their piercing eyes?
There /seems/ to be a correlation between iris eye color & activity cycle.
Owls with YELLOW eyes are more likely to be 'diurnal': day-hunters, as with this Northern hawk-owl (Surnia ulula) which hunts, like a hawk, in the daytime.
