Speaking of impressive libraries, have you ever been to the Boston Public Library? Amazing place
Dr Hoffman was a nuclear chemist who was often the only woman in her chemistry courses. She earned her doctorate in 1951.

Beautiful day for a hike along the Appalachian Trail in VA. The views looking west were beautiful, but the nearby trees stole the show.

Here is a short Q&A thread on #COVID and #Flu vaccines for the upcoming respiratory virus season. I try to cover frequently asked questions. The good news is both vaccines will be available this fall though we need clarification on access to COVID vaccines for healthy folks <65.

Went for a hike this afternoon to see the Potomac River, and it did not disappoint. A mushroom I spotted along the way was doing its best impression of a carnation.

I'm repeating this as dogwoods are more broadly in flower. On the left with white bracts (not petals) is a flowering dogwood inflorescence, containing many flowers. The closeup shows the individual flowers. We can learn a lot just by looking at nature carefully.

This is a fascinating thread, and yet the era of box beds wasn’t exactly ancient history. Can’t help but wonder what other customs have been lost to time.
From the 14th to the 19th century, you might have encountered a scene like this in Western Europe, a mother delousing her child's hair, sitting on a chair in front of a small cupboard filled with linens & bedding.

This is a BOX BED. Let's learn about them.

What can you learn about an owl from their piercing eyes?

There /seems/ to be a correlation between iris eye color & activity cycle.

Owls with YELLOW eyes are more likely to be 'diurnal': day-hunters, as with this Northern hawk-owl (Surnia ulula) which hunts, like a hawk, in the daytime.
Northern Hawk Owl Overview, All About Birds, Cornell Lab of Ornithology
A bird of boreal forests, the Northern Hawk Owl behaves like a hawk but looks like an owl. Its oval body, yellow eyes, and round face enclosed by dark parentheses are distinctly owl. Its long tail and...
