These are good odd year wins. That said, a political system that oscillates between a liberal party and an increasingly fascist party will continue to degrade and move right.

We still need movement orgs and political leaders to embrace year-round democracy and deep reform. Hope they can get there.

Looking forward to learning all about how the right should move left to win elections tomorrow. They should maybe dye their hair pink, learn to love pronouns.
If I were in NY and somehow still undecided, this would make me grimly determined to stamp out what remains of Cuomo's public reputation

Yes. More like this. More fight. Polarize everything.

"Leaving his home in Ontario to work at a food bank Thursday morning, Carlos Jimenez pulled over to warn a group of federal agents that they should wrap up their stop of a car quickly because school-age children would soon gather there to take the bus, his lawyers said Sunday."
I cannot recommend this article highly enough
I wrote about Nazism in a small Michigan town, and in a large North American country; about the uses of and limits of shame; and on the importance of holding shared standards. www.the-reframe.com/the-death-of...

See, knew nothing. But now I know that, so thank you for clarifying it!

I was fighting fascism with the power of love and kindness and just really getting my ass handed to me. proteanmag.com/2025/11/01/w...
Before reading this, I knew absolutely nothing about his wife. Now I assume she is profoundly vile in some way beyond her shitty preference for fascist men

The USDA sent an email to grocery stores telling them they are prohibited from offering special discounts to customers affected by the SNAP funding lapse.
I'm aware of at least 2 stores that had offered struggling customers a discount, then withdrew it after receiving this email

The duty to keep the memories of the World War II generation alive will pass solely to us soon. The work of fighting fascism may never finish.
“Selma van de Perre, a valiant Jewish secretary who during World War II covertly transported suitcases bulging with cash, seditious newsletters, identity cards and ration books to Dutch resistance agents, even penetrating Nazi headquarters in Paris, died on Oct. 20 in London. She was 103.”

When you say something is a distraction, you are not-very-implicitly scolding anyone who makes a big deal out of it: You’re a sucker! You fell for the trick!

When the putative distraction is some egregious breach of political norms or actual laws, you are helping normalize and minimize the breach.
I find this distraction discourse unhelpful. Trump's video was appalling and significant and should be analyzed and denounced, and part of the work of politics is to turn it into a major controversy in its own right, as a symbol of Trump's autocratic disdain for the people.
Obama: The weird videos of a U.S. President with a crown on his head flying a fighter jet and dumping poop on protesting citizens… All of that is designed to distract you from the fact that your situation has not gotten better.

genuinely crazy-making how much the national press is indifferent to the verifiable fact that jd vance is buddy buddy with internet nazis, and the degree to which this is almost certainly a form of solidarity among people with a similar institution pedigree
mainstream media report on jd vance’s twitter mutuals, challenge level: impossible

Douthat writes that 2024, when Harris lost by 1.5% of the popular vote, was "an ideological referendum and progressivism lost." I wonder why he didn't view the 2020 election, when Trump lost by 4.5% of the popular vote, as a far more significant loss for conservatism.

Comparing the relation between the presidential election results in 2020 and 2024 with the post-election commentary is a fascinating exercise.

2020
Biden 81,283,501 popular votes, 51.3%
Trump 74,223,975 popular votes 46.8%

2024
Trump 77,302,580 49.8%
Harris 75,017,613. 48.3%
Trump's tastes lie squarely in the intersection of 'absurdly expensive' and 'tacky crap that looks like knockoffs'

This three-hops theory is especially insane. Even if you assume each person is connected to only 100 other people, there are 1m people within three hops of every suspected drug trafficker—and remember that even *known* drug traffickers aren’t legitimate targets. www.nytimes.com/2025/10/30/u...

We don't cast off one segment of society to save ourselves. It's a betrayal of everything we're trying to defend. It's a cowardly kind of self-preservation.

If your plan for escaping this bank robbery involves deliberately killing a few of our fellow hostages, maybe sit this chat out for a while?
This is why Gavin Newsom is a non-starter for me.

Sure, he's "a fighter" who's landed a few good punches on Trump, but that's not the same thing as a leader.

A real leader doesn't fight back against an authoritarian takeover by using the most vulnerable as his shield.
I keep seeing people say, oh, trans people must take a hit for the greater good and, first of all, no, you don't get to discard someone else's rights and second, we know from past experience that marginalized communities like theirs are merely the first to be targeted. They'll come for you next.
He is also preventing the Senate from negotiating. If they do anything but rubber stamp what the House passed, it has to go back to the House for a vote - which Trump's little Johnson has closed the door on.
Branding Schumer, who will barely scratch his nose without five polls and a consultant endorsement, as a radical is pretty fucking hilarious
