the defining image of the early 21st century is an agent of the state pointing a gun at a person, and a citizen pointing a smartphone camera back at them

we see this scene reenacted every day, around the world

A Brief History of Men are Becoming Less Manly

🧵
smithmatt.bsky.social
And even for those of us who don’t use it, AI pollutes the information ecosystem so much. Even if a peer reviewed article is real, was AI used to create it? Or even just in some of its references?
smithmatt.bsky.social
This is why I don’t use generative AI. If you know the area well, you don’t need AI to summarise it for you and it’ll be less work to do it right yourself. If you don’t know the area well you can’t tell whether anything you get back is correct or not.
irahyman.bsky.social
AI generated false references.

For a discussion with grad students, I asked ChatGPT for 10 academic papers with summaries on a topic I know well.

6/10 were made up citations that sounded possible (1 by me!).

Of the 4 real papers, the summaries all were over-general and included errors.
rikefranke.bsky.social
And here we go. I never wrote this article, and yet it is cited here.

And of course, it sounds so plausible, I seriously checked whether I had forgotten it, or the footnote was slightly wrong.

If you'd asked me which celebrity would posthumously unveil a list of people she wanted fired into the sun, I would not have guessed Jane Goodall

And vanilla works when you're the only game in town, but Threads has a monopoly on vanilla (just like X has a monopoly on being a massive Nazi playground).

Bluesky's future is in its niche, and whether Jay likes it or not that niche is an unholy mix of BlueAnon accounts and leftist freaks.

Attempting to appeal to the widest possible base at the expense of loyal users is a revealing choice about her priorities. She doesn't realize that without the continued investment and support of marginalized communities, her site has nothing novel to offer.

It's another flavor of vanilla. Great.

Imagine a future where you walk into a council chamber, a court, a parliamentary corridor, and the walls are filled with portraits of wāhine Māori, wāhine toa, exactly like this. For Te Whanganui-a-Tara, that future starts now. Ngā mihi nui ki a koe, Tory, for opening that door 💚💚💚

Tonight me and my whānau got to see the official mayoral portrait done by Pōneke artist, Clark Roworth. This felt like a lovely end to this chapter with my mana intact and we will leave behind a progressive long term plan for the next council. I’m proud of of us 💚

Today, more than ever, we must return to the heart, the center of feeling and emotion, the locus of freedom. Though it includes reason, the heart transcends and transforms it. Only by returning to the heart can we undergo a true ecological conversion that transforms our personal

Folks, come on. If Matisse had the technology to make a painting that kills you, it's undoubtable that he would have done so.

Some first reactions from me and Dayenu: NZ Jews Against the Occupation.
Absolute cowardice from Winston Peters and the Government today as they continue to reward genocide by refusing to recognise the State of Palestine. As Israel continues to massacre civilians, our Government doesn't even have the courage to recognise the truth - that Palestine exists, has existed and will continue to exist. At this rate, this country will go down in history as one of the few countries that continues to aide and abet this atrocity. New Zealand is breaking international law and supporting genocide. Dayenu will always stand alongside our Palestinian sisters and brothers against genocide and for justice and freedom.

Traumatised Palestinians are required to form a perfect pacifist government. Genocide may continue until they do this. They must perfectly mimic western democracy, minus the power and threats, or the murder continues. Also, if they do gather anywhere to do this, they'll be killed.

The dead boy tries to open his eyes.
He wants to see the world he is leaving.
But there is nothing to see here,
nothing and nothing, and anyway he is gone.
His parents held him while he died
but they are both dead, too.
Or he held them, no one remembers.
