Also goes for film!

I absolutely despise the use of "content" for cinema, which makes it hard to discuss film content (i.e. the contents of a film) without feeling a little gross.
No other word has done more damage to the craft of writing in recent years than “content”. Even if you’re using the word “content” ironically, or as a cute little joke, don’t. When someone calls writing “content” they’re pissing on someone’s hard work & passion. “Content” is Technosatan’s henchword.

We really could see widespread immunotherapy treatments for every cancer type in the next 20 years.

Just have to defeat Fascism again.
The Immune Cell Scientists Couldn’t Grow Until Now Could Change Cancer Treatment
Researchers have unlocked a way to grow the immune system’s “conductors” from stem cells, bringing ready-made cancer-fighting therapies a big step closer. For the first time, scientists at the Univers...

The minimum wage went up in 19 states this month — but the federal minimum wage has been stuck at a paltry $7.25 an hour since 2009.

Guess how much the wage would be today if it kept up with worker productivity over the years?

Go outside and walk around if you can, or just sit and experience some nature. Have a snack. Volunteer if you can, if you can't, maybe clean or do some chores so your brain feels like you've done *something*

I handle medical records for my job and they have to be treated as sensitive, confidential information. Nothing gets left out where someone can see it. Paper records are securely shredded. Digital information has to be locked down.

Do not, DO NOT feed your medical records into an AI.

If it seems scary to do something political, start volunteering for community aid: local refugee orgs, World Relief, food banks, homeless shelters, transitional housing, youth mentorship, incarcerated outreach programs.
For years I would constantly tweet and tweet and retweet about politics. I didn’t help a single person doing that. It just eroded my mental health a little every day. I promise that actually DOING something, even one small thing, feels a lot better than reposting a million memes.
I cannot emphasize enough the importance of finding one constructive real world offline thing you can do to use your particular skills in service of fighting fascism as a psychological defense against the constant drumbeat of fuckery

Hey, get that flu shot. Knowing folks who are catching this current flu and it's kicking them in the teeth -- the shot will, worst case scenario, prevent it from taking you to the hospital or the morgue. It might knock it out quicker for you or even help you duck catching it. (Mask up, too.)

Thread! It's very good. A big problem, especially with some bad actors in publishing, is the overall culture of silence--someone holding the contract to your work, your art, your craft, ultimately feels like they hold a lot of power, and writers don't speak up publicly.
I want to do a thread on "Small Press Red Flags" brought to you by years in the trenches combined with some issues I’m seeing pop up again in writer circles.

Note: an isolated incident might not be a red flag, but cumulative flags are always worth examination.

First off: Let’s talk about money.

LEVERAGE seemed like a silly little show about crime, but it was so much more than. Brilliant writing and execution, @johnrogers.bsky.social at his best, and a cast that must have required a few sold souls. The finale was perfect. So was everything else.

Starting tomorrow, the Trump administration is set to send notices to 1,000 student loan borrowers (first round) noticing them of an intent to garnish their wages for student loan debt.

This is cruel and unnecessary.

If you receive a notice, send it to us and we'll try to help.

I'm not sure how to word this but, there is a heck of a lot of communicable virus floating around in the air in indoor spaces in the US right now. Vaccines are awesome but I rarely see an important key to actually preventing transmission/infection mentioned:

N95 masks are very good. please consider

Ok I'm going to suggest a goal for everyone to try to accomplish right away: back up all of your files on an external hard drive or thumb drive. NOT the cloud! I mean on something you own not connected to the internet that some other company or person has control over.

If a bat touches you and you're not controlling it like this with thick gloves and knowing what you're doing

You need to get a rabies vaccination and I'm deadly serious.

If a bat *touches* you.
PSA for any bat-friends inspired by this post: thick work gloves like the ones being worn in this picture are absolutely necessary before attempting to handle a bat! Do not let it anywhere near bare skin! And if it appears ill or is acting erratically, do not approach, just call a pro

My attitude on this is that I'm not calling them because I think I can change their minds.

I'm calling them because it is unthinkable to let them do this without hearing how evil and awful they are.

My spite powers me. If I can get just 500 people a day to join me, we could fuck up their day.
I call Tommy Tuberville every fucking week, multiple times a week, because he can be evil but I don't have to let him do it without pushback.

So I don't need to hear excuses. I call the dumbest senator in the country. 😂
