Awarding the Nobel Peace Prize to Machado is a semi-concession to Trump. No, he didn't get the prize, but neither did they humiliate him by giving it to Greta or a Palestinian peace activist. One could even argue that this peace prize, paradoxically, justifies, Trump's plans for war in Venezuela.

It's a great day to remember how important a translator like @ottiliemulzet.bsky.social is for those of us who can only read in English.
Without her superb translations, we would have missed so much of the great work of László Krasznahorkai.

Chuffed for László Krasznahorkai winning the Nobel. Might mark it by re-reading one of his sentences over the weekend.

László Krasznahorkai! Now I have to try to read him again. (My first attempt didn't go well.)

Spanish-language sources (more than Anglo ones) suggest Joyce Carol Oates could get the Nobel for Literature tomorrow. Or Mia Couto. I'd say: Krasznahorkai is a longshot, Cărtărescu a possibility, Pynchon would be delightful but likely it will be a writer I didn't even think of.

this week during prime day sales take a moment and think about what you need, how quickly you need it, and where you might be able to get it in your community! It’s surprisingly easy to boycott the crummiest company on earth and there’s no shortage of great reasons to try start trying

Sorry, I don't know that one. My limited knowledge of pop culture...

No, no.... For those of us who have worked in Moldova (or for people who know Romania well), she's been a major figure for years.

One thing people fail to understand.
In 1920, there were about 15 million Jews worldwide, and about 600k Palestinian Arabs.
Zionists were confident that several million Jews would eventually migrate to Palestine, which would have made them a clear majority.

Funny how they're all white South Africans --"carcas," as other southern Africans call them-- nostalgic for the sledgehammer of apartheid.

The only time during which Israel could be reasonably described as a democracy was the six months period after ending the military rule over Palestinian citizens (December 66) and before imposing military rule over Palestinians in the West Bank and Gaza (June 67).

The best political news of the year came down to the very hard work of Maia Sandu and her colleagues — it was not at all a sure thing, and Putin had spent at least $100 million to make it not happen

Trump may be serious about this (at least Rubio is). US interventions on the South American mainland have all failed, except for Brazil 64 & Chile 73, when the national army was onside. It's not onside in Venezuela, which would become DT's Vietnam & a regional war.
