"Holy Dipstick!" is now on my list of exclamations.
Salisbury was rebuilt for aesthetic reasons, but they decided to build the new one on top of a gravel waterbed for insane reasons and it immediately began sinking, so they engineered more water underneath and now they check the water level twice a day with a Holy Dipstick. I dunno

Lawful immigration pathways are being weaponized by this administration.

Follow the rules and show up to your check-in? You risk arrest.

Miss a check-in? Your case is dismissed and you become deportable.

Secretary Noem knows this. I will continue monitoring 26 Fed until this abuse stops.

Favorite lines from KPop Demon Hunters songs:

1. Fit check for my napalm era. (Now intentionally misquoted as lip balm era.)

2. Between imposter and this monster I've been lost inside my head.

3. Bleeding isn't in my blood.

4. Jinu's "hee hee hee" while running, not a lyric but still a fav.

I got the shipping notification this morning.

1. Gathering Moss by Robin Wall Kimmerer may turn you into an amateur bryophyte enthusiast. I now have a 10X hand lens.

2. Lichen and Loam on YouTube (by Katie Green) will give you lots of woods walks filled with lichen and moss, knitting, and wonderful illustration.
A THREAD, which I am calling 'Some Of The Many Reasons Lichen And Moss Are Fucking Brilliant'.

1. They make public seating super comfy.

There are over 18,000 types of lichen in existence. My personal favourite is ‘village bench lichen’, which devotes its entire existence selflessly to gradually making communal public seating more furry and comfortable.

In 2007, a clip went viral of a man being stopped on the street by a Guangzhou TV reporter. The man was asked about a sex scandal that was all over the news at the time and his reply has been a popular Chinese slang phrase for not getting involved ever since. He said “I’m just here to buy soy sauce”

I will NEVER vote for a politician who votes for anti-trans legislation. Never. I don't care who it is, it's a dead issue. Move on. If my vote is so important to the future of democracy they should have thought of that before they voted to exterminate my child.

My astronomical winter places the solstice in the middle of the season. Midwinter, not the beginning of winter.

I understand that many organizations use the solstices and equinoxes as the starting points of their seasons, but that doesn't make sense to me.

Winter= 1 Nov - 31 Jan. The dark days.
Astronomical winter is defined as when the Earth's pole is tilted away from the Sun to its maximal value.

It begins on the MOMENT of the winter solstice, which is 10:03 a.m. Eastern Time (ET) on Dec 21 this year (2025).

So winter starts /simultaneously/ but at different times in each time zone.

When illegal slave ships were intercepted by British, French, Portuguese and other antislavery patrols in the 1800s, African captives were not freed - they were sent into indentured servitude. More than 700,000 souls. It’s a huge story in the history of abolition.

Winter is a slow burn for me. I have to remember to light the candles;find the beauty in the bare branches against the grey skies, revel in the giant orange sun sinking early into dusk. It’s nature taking a rest. She needs to, as do we all.

Two corollary things to remember when you genuinely want to help:
-You don't have to do this alone.
-You are probably not the hero of this story.

Obviously, there are times when someone needs to start things rolling. But even then, there are often already community orgs doing similar work that you can team up with. No matter what the problem, if it's too big for one person, look for the helpers, and see how you can combine forces.

I want to elaborate on this a little:

For both kids AND adults, sometimes one of the hardest things to do in a big crisis is figure out where and how to help.

And often, the best answer to that isn't "reinvent the wheel," it's "find existing efforts and join in."

An important addendum to "look for the helpers" is "and then join them."

Let's be totally clear here: not only does Substack let Nazis host their shit; they actively encourage them, sometimes paying them six figure salaries to host their shit.

Substack actively courts Nazis to their platform.

Ghost and beehiiv will actively help you move off that platform.
You know what's great about substack? Leaving it.

Some of you aren't getting the whole nazi thing. Let's simplify it. Nazis are always the villains. Substack lets nazis host their shit.

It's literally thinking some people deserve death for being born not white.
