Since this once-bestselling manga went on hiatus a decade ago, literally nobody knows what happened to the creator.

It's just so wild that this was one of the biggest anime of the late 80s & early 90s and inspired 2 American movies, and has just been utterly abandoned unfinished by its creator for over a decade now.
